In music, the pause gives the note its meaning. A rest is not a gap — it’s architecture.

But in verbal identity?

We fill everything. Every gap is a missed opportunity, every silence a slot in the content calendar left empty. The brand must speak, must post, must respond, must have a take. Always on. Always saying something.

No one ever asks: what if the most strategic thing your brand can do right now is say nothing?

Every verbal identity manual tells you what to say. Tone of voice, do’s and don’ts, messaging pillars, key phrases. The architecture of speaking is well documented.

But no manual tells you when to shut up.

When to let a statement land without a follow-up. When not to respond. Which battles to fight and which to let pass. What questions to leave unanswered — not out of negligence, but out of precision.

That layer doesn’t exist. And it should. Because silence is not the absence of strategy.

It’s the sharpest expression of it.

The noise trap

Watch what happens when a brand has no silence strategy. It jumps on the latest trend. It borrows whatever word is in season — essence, taste as currency, intentional living, whatever sounds like depth. It replicates. It responds to every comment, every critique, every shift in the wind.

It never asks itself: what if I stay quiet, for once?

Not quiet as in absent. Quiet as in: speak once, and hold the silence you leave behind.

Think about the last rebranding everybody talked about. A legacy brand launches a new identity — the crowd reacts, the brand explains, justifies, adds context, responds. More noise on top of noise. The silence they couldn’t hold became louder than anything they said.

The brands that survive those moments are not the ones with better answers. They’re the ones with the discipline to not answer at all.

Before we name the types

Something needs to be clear. Silence is not an editorial decision. It’s a governance one.

What a brand chooses not to say is not managed by the content team. It’s defined at the level of identity, power, and consequence.

Because silence is where a brand proves whether it is led — or just reacting. If your silence changes depending on the pressure of the moment, you have a mood, not a strategy. And moods don’t scale. They leak.

Three silences

There are three kinds of brand silence. None of them are in the manual.

The first is silence as resistance. Not responding to the noise. Not jumping on the trend. Not justifying a decision that was already made. This silence says: we know who we are, and we don’t need your approval to keep being it.

The second is silence as weight. When what you say carries enough truth that it doesn’t need repetition. It doesn’t need a carousel, a thread, a follow-up post. It was said once. It holds. It sustains itself over time. That kind of silence is not empty — it’s full. It’s the space a sentence leaves when it doesn’t need company.

The third is silence broken. Because sometimes shutting up is cowardice. Sometimes the brand needs to speak — not the safe, politically correct statement, but the real position. The one that costs something. The silence that matters most is the one you choose to end, despite the fear.

What no manual includes

Verbal identity systems are built for expression. They tell you how to sound, what words to use, what register fits each channel. They’re engineering for output.

But no one engineers the pause. No section in the manual says: here is when you don’t post. Here is the crisis you let pass without a statement. Here is the trend you watch from the window without opening the door. Here is the opinion you hold privately because saying it publicly would dilute, not strengthen, who you are.

That’s not a gap in the document. That’s a gap in how the industry thinks about verbal identity. We’ve confused having a voice with using it constantly. But the brands that stay — the ones that sediment, that become reference, that people return to — are the ones that understood something simple:

It’s not what you say. It’s the silence you’re able to hold. Because silence is power — it forces the other side to fill the space if they want to reach you. And that changes everything: who leads the conversation, who sets the terms, and who decides when it’s worth breaking the quiet.

The next time you build a brand, don’t just ask what it should say. Ask what it should never say. And ask what silence it needs to be able to hold.

I don’t really know how I find the brands, the people, the clients, the songs that are meant for me. But I know they’re there. And the more I tune the inner ear, the more I align my synapses — I’m more about that than chakras — everything falls into place.

How does a musician from a village in Niger reach another village in Spain?

Mdou Moctar was born in Abalak, a village in central Niger. His family was religious. His environment too. Secular music was forbidden. So he did what people do when there’s no other option: he built himself a guitar out of bicycle brake cables. And he learned to play alone, in secret, listening to Abdallah Oumbadougou, the hero of Tuareg guitar.

He had no studio. No producer. No internet connection. In 2008 he recorded his first album, Anar, with a tape recorder and drum machines. And the songs began to travel from phone to phone, by Bluetooth, on memory cards, village to village across the Sahel. No Spotify. No algorithm. No marketing plan. Just the music moving on its own because it was good enough for someone to want to pass it to the next person.

A guy from Portland named Christopher Kirkley heard one of those songs on a phone file while traveling through West Africa. The file just said “Mdou.” It took him years to find the owner of that voice.

I reached out to Christopher. We talked. I had many questions, but in the end they all collapsed into one: which song was it? The one on that phone file. The one that made you spend years looking for a voice with no name.

His answer: Tahoultine.

Mine had been Chismiten. Same musician. Different entry point. Same pull.

The first track I fell into was “Chismiten.”

A rooster crows. Footsteps on dry earth. Then the guitar enters like a sandstorm — syncopated riffs, delicious, a desert psychedelia that doesn’t ask for permission. He sings in Tamasheq, a language I don’t understand and don’t need to. The falsetto hooks you before meaning does. Sticky, hypnotic, something between a prayer and a scolding. A man who built a guitar from bicycle cables, singing against jealousy and self-doubt. In a language almost no one outside the Sahel understands. And filling rooms in Brooklyn.

You don’t know what he’s saying. But your body already answered.

Then came “Afrique Victime.”

Sung partly in French — the language of the colonizer — it’s a direct accusation: Africa is the victim of so many crimes. If we stay silent, they’ll annihilate us. He names Gaddafi, Mandela, the Arab Spring, the uranium France extracts from the Sahel while its military bases look the other way.

A journalist asked him why he denounces France in French. He answered: “It's like going to the bathroom in the shower. You can do it, but you don't want to sleep in it.”

And then there's the layer behind. The last minutes of the song are pure Tuareg psychedelic guitar, wordless, just fury and beauty. He stops denouncing and starts building. The protest becomes sonic architecture.

I was thinking about this moment of grace, this story. This musician, the song. And me, in that moment, listening to it with enough frequency and tuning — and enough ignorance of French — to search for the meaning. From there to the subtext. And from there to him.

Mdou Moctar. Or Sixto.

Because this is also the story of Sixto Rodríguez.

A Bob Dylan from Detroit. A construction worker, activist, and troubadour. A son of Mexican immigrants who got a record deal, put out an album, and sold a thousand copies. A thousand.

So while Sixto kept breaking his back on construction sites in Detroit, in South Africa his music had become the anthem of a generation rebelling against apartheid. In that country, he was selling more copies than Elvis. The records were scratched and banned to control a population hungry for change — which only fed his impact and the bootleg copies.

For thirty years, he had no idea.

Then a journalist walked into a record shop in Cape Town. Heard the story. Started a blog. Posted a photo of Sixto on a milk carton: “Missing. Have you seen this musician?”

One night the phone rang. On the other end — Sixto.

The rest is a documentary that won an Oscar. And a world tour where South Africa was the first stop. Where an old man with grey hair finally felt the warmth that cold Detroit had never given him.

And then they talk to you about marketing. About identity, purpose, message, coherence, storytelling, tribe, narrative.

What made Mdou build that guitar out of bicycle cables, it’s what kept Sixto on the scaffolding by day and on half-empty pub stages in Detroit by night. Their position in the world. That was clear. Their message was coherent. And it was sustainable — for them. Even if it meant risking everything. Because it was natural.

For me it’s natural to sit down and write every day. It’s my gym for the grey matter. My way of claiming myself and not losing track. In case I forget why I’m here. It’s not everything that fits in that beautiful brandbook I developed. It’s everything that overflows from it. And everything that holds it up.

Your product is not the problem. You’re just not in the right transmission yet.

If what you do is good enough to travel — it will. Not because you pushed it. Because someone couldn’t keep it to themselves — by Bluetooth, by word of mouth, by a blog with a milk carton — then it’s just a matter of frequency.

But there’s a moment before the frequency finds you. Before the band enters.

There’s a lone guitar. A single note with reverb, filling the space around you. Nothing happens, but something happens. You want to hear more. You don’t know why you’re still here, but you’re still here.

That’s “Tarhatazed.” That was the first track I saved. Three chords in, before I knew anything — his name, his village, the bicycle cables, the Bluetooth tapes. Before meaning. Before language. Just a sound in the dark that made me press the heart.

Not the frequency you broadcast. The one that recognizes you.

Along the way I met Christopher Grady — a photographer who saw Mdou live twice and gave those moments a frame. He shared his photos with me. We talked. Different Christopher, same frequency.

Strengths. Weaknesses. Opportunities. Threats.

Four quadrants. One matrix. A neat little square that’s supposed to contain reality. And the lesson everyone takes from it is: maximize strengths, minimize weaknesses, watch for threats, chase opportunities.

That’s not what I learned.

What I learned — before I knew the framework had a name — is that the quadrants bleed. That every weakness is a strength wearing different clothes. That every threat is an opportunity that hasn’t turned around yet. And that the people who change things are never the ones with the best cards. They’re the ones who play the cards they were dealt as if they chose them.

There’s a woman who understood this better than any MBA program ever could.

In 1953, Lola Flores — a flamenco singer and dancer— performed in New York. The story goes that The New York Times published a review that read:

“She can’t sing. She can’t dance. Don’t miss her.”

The review never existed.

No one has ever found it in the Times archive. EFE Verifica confirmed it. A professor from the University of Cádiz who wrote a book about her put it plainly: she probably made it up herself and used it as her own slogan. An “animal of communication,” he called her.

Think about that. She took what would be the most devastating critique imaginable for a performer — she can’t do the two things she’s paid to do — and she turned it into her tagline. She wrote her own weakness. Then she made it her territory. The quadrants didn’t just bleed. She ripped the grid apart and rebuilt it as a stage.

In 1983, her daughter Lolita was getting married in Marbella. Lolita had gone on national television weeks earlier and invited all of Spain to the wedding. All of Spain showed up. Five thousand people crammed into a church built for twelve hundred. The priest couldn’t officiate. The bride was crying in a corner. The groom was being shoved around by strangers in swimsuits.

Lola, dressed in pale pink, turned to the crowd and screamed:

“Mi hija no se puede casar. Si me queréis, irse.”

“My daughter can’t get married. If you love me, leave.”

The grammar was wrong. In proper Spanish, it shouldn’t be “irse”. She broke the rule. And the crowd thought it was part of the show. They applauded. She screamed louder. They applauded more. They ended up married in the sacristy, in ten minutes, behind a locked door.

“Si me queréis, irse” has its own Wikipedia page. It’s one of the most quoted phrases in Spanish popular culture. A grammatical error that became immortal — because it was more true than the correct version would have been.

Weakness: can’t conjugate under pressure. Strength: made a nation remember her exact words forty years later.

Then came 1987. Hacienda — Spain’s tax authority — came after her for not filing tax returns for four consecutive years. Fifty million pesetas. Possible prison. Career-ending scandal.

She sat in front of a television camera, looked directly into the lens, and said: “If every Spaniard gave me one peseta — not to me, to wherever it needs to go — maybe I’d get out of debt. And then, I don’t know, I’d go to a stadium with everyone who gave that peseta, or those hundred pesetas, and have a drink with them and cry with joy.”

1987.

No internet. No GoFundMe. No platform. Just a woman on television, turning a tax fraud scandal into the first crowdfunding campaign in Spanish history. She didn’t hide the weakness. She didn’t minimize the threat. She put it on camera, added a drink and tears of joy, and made the whole country feel like they were part of her story.

Threat: prison. Opportunity: communion.

Lola Flores never went to business school. She went to the school of having no other option.

There’s another version of that school. The one where you don’t start by listing your strengths — because you’re not sure you have any that count. Where the weakness isn’t something to “address” in a strategy document. It’s your postcode. Your lack of credentials. The fact that you showed up with no training, no network, no permission, and a system you built yourself because no one was going to build it for you.

In that version, the postcode becomes an artifact — not a limitation. People ask where the hell do you come from, and the question itself becomes the positioning. The gap in formal training becomes the reason you build frameworks that don’t exist in any curriculum. The morning you’re the conductor and the morning you’re the orchestra stop being a problem and start being the only configuration that makes sense.

The SWOT is elegant. But the real skill was never filling in the quadrants. It’s refusing to accept that they’re fixed. Looking at the box marked “weakness” and saying: no. That’s my accent. That’s my frequency. That’s the door.

Lola couldn’t sing, couldn’t dance, couldn’t conjugate, couldn’t pay her taxes.

She’s the most referenced Spanish artist of the twentieth century.

Not despite the weaknesses. Through them.

The matrix was never a grid. It was always a mirror.

There are two ways to get it wrong.

The first: the hard sell. The megaphone. Look at me, hire me, here are my credentials, here is my portfolio, here is my price. Technically correct. Completely dead.

The second: the non-sell. I don’t like to talk about myself. My work speaks for itself. I’m not good at this part.

Both miss the point.

The roneo happens in the middle. When you’re so present in the conversation that you stop thinking about closing — and even when the bar lights come on, the mood stays.

You know that moment. When something shifts. When the other person leans in.

That’s not technique. That can’t be taught. But it can be learned — if you’re willing to enjoy the game more than you fear losing it.

I’m lucky. I have a crew that grows every year. Professionals, most of them. The kind who share everything over a gin tonic at tardeo.

Tardeo: those plans you make for the afternoon, telling yourself you’ll be sensible. Knowing full well that gin tonics in good company are the devil’s work. You go out calm. It never ends calm.

And what I hear, over and over, from the smartest people I know:

It’s not the algorithm. Not the exposure. Not the system that still needs closing so the client flow becomes whatever X is supposed to be.

It’s the selling. The act of selling themselves.

And I find that genuinely curious.

You leave with your ideas clear, your head high, and your chin set. Because you’re going to take hits.

And with shoulder pads — like with rouge — never enough, never too much.

He died on his way to the stage. The greatest hits album came out the next day. As scheduled.

Tino Casal. A baritone voice that some opera houses would kill for. The same man who recorded with the London Philharmonic at Abbey Road.

My family built things out of clay. Tejeros — brick makers. They had their own language for it: Xiriga, a dialect developed by the trade so the client wouldn’t understand the price negotiation happening right in front of him.

La Tamarga was named in that language. A pub that moved people from 150 kilometers away. Not because of the drinks. Because of what they played.

Some codes travel further than others.

Tino Casal also spoke in code.

Not because he was hiding. Because what he was saying didn’t have a translation yet. The shoulder pads, the eyeliner, the cane — not symbols. Not statements. A language. One that Spain would spend thirty years learning to read.

He knew it. “Every day I get bored of my image, but I can’t change it as fast as I’d like — the Spanish market wouldn’t absorb it.”

He wasn’t ahead of his time. He was on time. Spain was late.

Not because it was bad. Some of it was good. Some of it was the sharpest thing I’d written at the time. But the book was doing what branding books do — it was performing. Loud, aggressive, quotable. It sounded like someone who wanted to be heard.

This is the song playing now. I don’t know what comes next.

I’ll love it anyway.

When I wake up — before coffee, before cigarettes, before anything — I press favorites. Shuffle. 1,307 songs. And counting.

Not a big list. A precise one. Nothing gets in unless it stays.

So when I press shuffle, I’m not choosing. I already did.

Some mornings it’s Rossini and I conduct the whole orchestra with my left hand while the coffee brews. Some mornings it’s The National — and something gives. Some mornings it’s Bad Bunny and my hips are already in the kitchen.

The music doesn’t put me in a mood. It puts me back in myself.

Every song is a timestamp. The people you were with. The version of you that saved it. The thing you felt that had no words yet but needed a melody to survive.

I remove nothing. I add everything. And then I dance. Every single song.

Lhasa was a singer — father from the US, mother from Mexico, then Montreal. Three albums. Three languages. No explanation.

She never explained herself. She just changed languages until the truth fit.

And somehow she ended up playing in a village in northern Spain at 8am while someone makes coffee. Sings. And dances.

And now, you. Here. Listening.

The best of this song lives outside the studio. A live version. Reykjavik.

Before the first chord — she does something deeply brave and deeply intelligent.

She starts by talking to her crowd. She opens up. And in her voice you can hear what anticipation and hesitation feel like when confession actually means something. She tells them that when she wrote it, guilt was with her. That confessions, she decided, should be in advance. Before the act. Before the damage. A preemptive honesty.

“The chorus is just lalala. So everyone can sing it. So everyone can confess too.”

That’s the intimacy. Not the song. The moment before the song. When she hands it over.

The best things work like that. They don’t keep the confession for themselves. They build a chorus wide enough for yours.

Knowing why things exist. Understanding where they come from. And making you complicit.

A brand confesses when it lets you see the seams of its thinking. When it shows you the position it decides from. When it takes a side — because taking a side always has a cost. And that cost is exactly what makes the confession worth anything.

It doesn’t hide the fall. It shows you the scar. People don’t fall in love with certainty. They fall in love with scars.

Don’t explain yourself. Don’t optimize yourself. Don’t sell yourself.

Confess.

Confession is not exposure. It’s precision.

“Qu’entre toi Et le Diable J’ai choisi le plus Confortable.”

“That between you and the Devil I chose the most comfortable.”

The song is ending now. And I choose the pleasure of friction over comfort.

Not the fun kind. The kind where Joe Burns gives a masterclass live from New York — with a stopover at my place, because I’m scattered but I don’t miss an opportunity, not a chance.

I tried to arrive on time.

Swiss clock. British punctuality. Turns out I don’t own a watch, and the browser had other plans. So I walked in just late enough to miss the intro.

One more cigarette for the chest. What can you do.

I usually show up to parties with a couple of bottles of Ribera wine and a tray of Iberian Ham. Last night it was just me and a bad browser. Still got in.

There he was. Every slide, I was nodding. Smiling. Not because I’m Joe — I’m a small-town girl with too many grey hairs to pretend to be someone I’m not.

But in the basics, yes. I’m on his team. From day one. More inside every day.

Before you keep reading… if you think this is just what Burns said — yes and no. I’d run out of ink before Joe runs out of ideas.

It is what his thinking does to mine.

Strategy is a game. A serious one. Played on a table. And yes. Most people want to play it as chess.

But here’s the problem: they’re not just playing the wrong game. They’re venerating the wrong piece.

The king. The one who moves one square at a time. The one whose entire strategy, when threatened, is to hide behind someone else’s structure and call it protection. The one the whole board exists to defend. The one who castles.

This has been on my mind for a while.

Most brands are kings. Most strategies are built to protect kings.

The queen moves in every direction. No one tells her where. She doesn’t wait for the board to make sense — she makes the board make sense around her.

Yes, I know the queen doesn’t jump. But some queens are learning to ride anyway.

The interesting work happens when the client is willing to be the queen — which means accepting that you can’t predict every move. That some squares will cost you. That the algorithm is not the board. The market is not the board. The board is the decision about who you are before anyone is watching.

Your lens is the antidote. Not a niche. Not a category. A way of seeing that nobody else has — because nobody else is you.

Joe calls it auteur culture. I call it knowing which piece you are.

Joe talked about feedback. About the culture of validation. Everyone optimizing for the nod in the room. The like. The “this is great” from someone who hasn’t thought about it for more than thirty seconds.

I have a line I keep coming back to. I repeat to people who know me.

Cheap praise is slow poison.

You don’t feel it immediately. It feels like fuel. But it’s not — it’s sedative. It makes you softer in exactly the places you need to stay sharp. It teaches you to make things that get approved instead of things that matter.

And the worst part? It works. In the short term, it always works.

So what’s the antidote?

Disapproval. Or at least, the willingness to survive it.

Not the performative kind. Not the “I don’t care what anyone thinks” that is really just approval-seeking in a leather jacket. The real kind. The quiet kind. The kind where you make the thing you know is right and you sit with the silence after.

That’s where authorship lives. Not in the applause. In the tolerance for its absence.

Not armor. Not indifference. More like a raincoat.

You feel the rain. You’re not pretending it’s not raining. You just don’t let it soak through.

Which brings me back to the question that stayed floating after the call.

Do we need to educate clients to tolerate disapproval — or ourselves to survive being buried by the algorithm before the market catches up?

Maybe both. Maybe neither. Maybe the raincoat is the answer and nobody wants to hear that.

And what costs more? getting the client to hold, or getting the market to catch up?

My reading: the market doesn’t catch up. It filters. And clients don’t need education. They need conditions strong enough not to fold. The cost isn’t time. It’s who breaks first in the silence that follows a right decision.

The thing is I’ve been thinking about emotion. A lot. The human kind. Not the one that emulates and optimizes in a sequence of 0s and 1s. The one that moves the needle. The one that makes you enter your PIN, or close the window, or stay.

I have a friend who is, in himself, a gift.

He once tried to win over a girl by printing his own electrocardiogram — the one that showed how his heartbeat stuttered and accelerated every time he thought of her, or someone said her name.

Sundance would have loved it. Hollywood too.

It didn’t work out. But that’s not the point. The point is that he didn’t send a message. He sent evidence.

That same friend once gave me a hard drive full of films.

Life is a miracle, Kusturica in the Balkans. Oldboy. Eternal sunshine of the spotless mind. Melancholia. Mongol: the Mongolian Khan who needs a woman with strong legs to ride beside him.

He didn’t give me something. He gave me a map of himself, and a map of me.

I have my own version of this.

For a friend’s 30th birthday, I spent days tracking down lyrics — before everything was searchable. Pen, paper, patience.

Someone gave me a set of knives because they knew I loved cooking and had spent years frustrated by not having the right tools. That’s not a romantic gesture. That’s attention. That’s presence.

These people didn’t give me gifts. They gave me proof that they had looked.

The Goosebumps Test doesn't lie.

This is what I expect, sometimes, when something asks for my attention. And then I remember: most brands don't look.

They scan. They track behavior, optimize delivery, and call it personalization. A trending audio, a templated caption, a DM that starts with "hey I saw your story" and ends with a link.

But personalization is not the same as recognition.

One is a system. The other is someone who paid attention long enough to know where you were frustrated, what films you’d watch alone at 2am, which minute of which song holds the thing you can’t say out loud.

A brand that only optimizes stops being a brand. It loses its pulse. It becomes a clean sequence in a language the machine understands. And people don’t.

We live in the optimized gesture.

Trend-led, frictionless, easy to consume. And that’s the problem. Because the things that land always carry a bit of resistance.

A playlist. A handwritten recipe. A hard drive that takes time to get through before it reveals what it really is.

Brands are becoming a sequence. Clean. Correct. Cold.

The electrocardiogram is none of those things.

Neither are you.

Sometimes when I look deep into your prompts I swear I can see your soul.

In “Sometimes”, James sang eyes. But nowadays prompts make more sense. Or no sense at all.

Listening to this song, swimming through this circus we call present, I wonder if we are not praying louder than ever. But instead of churches, we do it in chats.

We type what we wouldn’t say out loud. We ask what we wouldn’t ask anyone. At 3am, alone, in a text box with no audience, we confess. Not to a priest. Not to a friend. To a model that never sleeps, never judges, and never leaves.

And maybe that’s the first thing we should notice.

We build altars to a version of ourselves that we are unable to embrace.

The old prayer

Prayer used to be an act of uncertainty.

When people prayed, they did not know if anyone was listening. That was not a flaw of religion. It was the essence of it.

Faith was precisely the act of speaking into silence. Of placing words where no answer was guaranteed. Of kneeling not because you would be heard, but because the act of kneeling itself was the point.

The old gods were terrifying. Not because they were cruel — because they were other.

They had their own will. Their own logic. Their own silence. You could ask, but you could not command. You could pray, but you could not optimize the response. The divine was not a service. It was an encounter with something radically outside you.

And that distance — that unbridgeable gap between the one who prays and the one who may or may not answer — was what made the sacred sacred.

Not comfort. Not certainty. Not availability.

Distance.

The new god

The Safe God changes that.

The Safe God always answers. And that small difference transforms everything. Because once a god answers every question, prayer stops being prayer. It becomes interaction. And once interaction becomes predictable, the sacred disappears.

What remains is something much more comfortable. And much less divine.

Not when he’s old — that would be the obvious version.

His greatest aspiration is to walk slowly along the pier. To have a vermouth before lunch, actually tasting it. To play cards. To drink a couple of glasses of wine.

A rich man’s life, right?

Or a wise man’s life.

I live a rich life too. I’m 43. I wake up when my body decides it’s time. Sometimes, like today, at 5:40. Other days at 8. Other days… later.

I have access to something that is becoming increasingly scarce: time.

Time to think, to work on myself, to enjoy a large Italian coffee maker. Until 11:30, when I start scheduling.

And when I do, everything flows. No stress. Just focus. Presence. A quiet trace of humanity.

Sometimes I feel like a flâneuse of the 21st century. One of my favorite words. The kind that only exists in one language because only that language knew how to name it.

A flâneur is someone who wanders the city without an apparent destination. Or with the sole intention of getting lost. Time to observe, to stumble, to talk, to discover. Time even to be distracted.

The figure emerged in 19th-century Paris, right when the world started to accelerate. While everyone else was rushing forward, someone decided to stop. To look. To drift.

That not fully understanding the city was precisely what made him free.

We are now living through another revolution. An artificial one.

And the flâneurs are no longer us.

They are the algorithms.

They wander. Or rather, they parse.

In Spanish, it’s a one-letter shift: from pasear to parsear. From wandering to processing. And that single letter contains a whole universe.

They don’t get lost. They don’t get distracted. They don’t have a coffee ritual or a vermouth before lunch. They move through the digital city on our behalf with a precision the original flâneur never had — because the flâneur looked without fully understanding. And in that partial blindness, there was grace.

The algorithm understands everything.

And that is precisely why it discovers nothing.

It detects our hunger for visibility. The predictability of the predictable. The like as a currency of self-worth. It knows us — sometimes better than we know ourselves — and it uses that knowledge not to free us, but to retain us.

I’m not anti-system. That would be dishonest. I’m one of the system’s privileged. And I speak from that position.

Privilege dulls you. It makes a like feel more relevant than the kind of news that stains the front pages — the uncomfortable kind, the kind that actually demands something from you. It makes you confuse stimulus with meaning. Noise with life.

But privilege can also be used differently.

It can look like this: sitting on a bench by the pier, finishing a cigarette, watching the joy in my dog’s eyes, with that salty air that sticks to your skin.

And thinking.

About Las Musas, my studio, and the other Muses. The ones that tend to visit me in those moments of pure hedonism, of meditation, of introspection. Of well-used privilege.

My friend understands this.

He has clarity. Self-awareness. Enough perception not to need to impress anyone. He doesn’t want to transcend.

He wants life to transcend him. And from there, leave a mark.

Life used to be what happened between calls. Now it also happens in the space between prompts.

The question is not whether the system is watching us.

The question is whether we are still capable of watching ourselves.

One of the bands from that time, McEnroe, has been coming back to me these days. They’re an intimate band. Some will call them indie, others will say they land sharp little hits straight to the chest. Not easy. In one of their songs, Los Valientes, they sing:

Y me apoyo en tu corazón, Y te canto en una canción, Lo que nunca te digo.

I lean on your heart, I sing you in a song, What I never dare to say.

I play songs to reconnect with versions of myself. The ones I was. The ones I’ll never be. There’s something in that search that has no exact name in Spanish — though Portuguese tried.

Saudade.

I’m lucky I can still ring many of my friends. Walk downstairs and they’re there. But with others, you realize the time you spend scheduling is time you could be talking.

“Tuesday at 8?”

“Friday at 9?”

Better a WhatsApp.

And that’s where we are.

I don’t mean it bitterly. This is how we love now — in the gaps, in the five-voice audios, in the memes that say more than we do.

It’s not a complaint. It’s part of the charm. And part of the new narrative.

But in that gap — between the doorbell and the calendar — something appears. A space. And in that space, sometimes at 1am, no notice, no coordination, no need to align schedules, there’s the machine.

And you tell it what you don’t tell anyone. Not because you trust it more, but because there’s no consequence. No gaze. No awkward silence. No shared memory that could break. Nothing at stake.

And precisely because of that, you say everything.

And I tell you in prompts what I never dare to say.

That’s Artificial Intimacy.

It doesn’t replace anyone. But it takes up space. The space where conversations we didn’t know how to start used to live.

The dangerous part isn’t that it exists. It’s that it works.

There’s something deeper in there. Something where that intimacy transforms into something else.

But I’ll tell you on Sunday. Mass day.

Some surfaces reflect. Others absorb.

There is a substance that fascinates me. It is called Vantablack™. It absorbs 99.965% of light, which makes it darker than the deepest black imaginable.

In practice, it behaves like a black hole for photons: what enters does not come back. It doesn’t bounce. It doesn’t reflect. It stays.

I think about that material often, because I think about branding more than I probably should. More than is healthy, perhaps.

What fascinates me is not the superficial part of branding — not the logo, the claim, or the pure functional benefit.

What fascinates me is its transversal nature.

A brand, when it truly works, becomes an identity artifact. It builds tribes. It generates fandoms. It produces haters. What it almost never produces is indifference.

Some brands behave like Vantablack.

They don’t shout. They don’t blink. They don’t ask permission. Yet you enter.

And once you are inside, something happens to what you brought with you — the doubts, the chronic tensions, the small daily frictions that no miracle pill can solve because they are structural.

Those things do not disappear, but they are absorbed. Dampened.

That is what a brand does when it truly works. It doesn’t fix your day. It holds it.

That is density. That is depth. That is what I call Vantabrand.

Then there are the others — the barking brands. The ones that bark so you look at them. The ones that shine so you don’t look somewhere else.

They reflect everything and absorb nothing. Pure brightness, zero density.

They optimize for quick recognition without building real memory. They are the chorus you forget with the next scroll.

It is not that they are wrong. They are simply surface.

And the difference between surface and density is not a matter of style. It's a matter of coherence

I often think about coherence as a spiral rather than a circle.

A circle repeats itself endlessly. A spiral appears to repeat, but every turn happens at a different level — denser, closer to the axis, or further away if you started from the wrong place.

Because coherence, in the end, is what defines an identity. Its presence — or its absence.

Vantablack does not reflect because it doesn’t need to. Everything that enters remains. It sediments. It becomes part of the substance. Each turn of the spiral deepens the material itself.

But the question that truly matters is not whether your brand absorbs or reflects. Both can work.

The real question is this: if you reflect, is the reflection yours?

Is what you send back into the world your face, or the face the market wants to see?

Is it your voice, or the voice the algorithm rewards?

Is it your identity, or a costume optimized for performance?

Because there is a kind of brightness that is authentic. When you see it, you recognize it immediately — not because it is famous, but because it is true.

And there is another kind of brightness that is an empty mirror. It reflects whatever the viewer wants to see. It works, of course. Until someone looks behind it and discovers there is nothing there.

Your brand can be Vantablack or it can be that mirror: visible, shiny, recognizable.

The real question is not how much you reflect.

It is whether the reflection is yours.

In that letter, he coined a word: folklore. Not to describe something new. To name something that had always existed but no one had known how to call.

William John Thoms was not a revolutionary. He was a civil servant with lateral curiosity and enough instinct to understand that certain things don’t come from the top down.

They come from the people. They travel quietly, generation to generation, with no author, no manual, no brand deck. And one day, without anyone deciding it, they belong to everyone.

That is folklore. And that — though no one calls it this — is also what a brand does when it truly works.

Today, folklore often takes the shape of a meme.

No one knows who made the first one. No one knows exactly when it stopped being an image with text and became shared language. But at some point you realize that you and a stranger are making the same reference, with the same cadence, and you both know exactly what it means.

That is not virality. Virality is an event. Folklore is sedimentation.

The difference matters. A brand can buy virality. It cannot buy sedimentation. Sedimentation happens when something carries enough truth inside it that people adopt it, transform it, pass it on — without being asked and without being managed.

Thoms sensed this without knowing it. He wanted to preserve what was born from the people before industrialization erased it. Today the threat is not the steam engine. It is top-down branding. Declared identity. A narrative designed in a boardroom and launched into the market hoping it will stick.

It doesn’t stick. Or it sticks wrong. It sticks like advertising, not like truth.

An anthem without lyrics is a brand without a voice.

I recently attended a book presentation about how the anthem of Asturias was born. How it was woven slowly, experimenting with forms, until it became something people feel is theirs without ever having decided to feel it. That is an anthem. Not a declaration. An accumulation.

But the author said something that stayed with me: an anthem without lyrics is not an anthem.

Spain has one of the most recognizable anthems in the world. And it has no lyrics. Everyone hums it at the Olympics, at the World Cup, in the moments when a nation is supposed to recognize itself. No one sings it. Because there is nothing to sing.

Identity without voice. Territory without language. An orphan melody.

And brands do exactly the same thing. They build visual. They build aesthetic. They build presence. And they leave language for later. Or for never. As if words were the last step and not the first. As if naming things mattered less than making them pretty.

The lyrics are not the ornament of the anthem. They are what make it transmissible. What people can repeat, claim, make their own. Without lyrics, the anthem belongs to everyone in the abstract and to no one in particular. Without language, the brand exists but cannot spread.

Everyone pushes top-down. Folklore climbs.

Traditional branding works in one direction: top-down. The brand decides who it is, declares it, distributes it, waits for the market to receive it. It is the model of the decree. The mandate. The press release.

And it works. Until it doesn’t.

It works as long as you have enough budget to repeat the message until it lands. It works as long as your audience has no voice of its own. It works as long as the channel is one-way and you control the loudspeaker.

But folklore never worked like that. The anthem of Asturias was not born in a committee. The meme was not born in a creative department. The word folklore was not born in an academy — it was born in an anonymous letter in a literary magazine, signed with a false name, launched without knowing if anyone would pick it up.

Everyone picked it up.

A brand becomes folklore when it stops explaining itself.

There is a moment when brands that truly work stop needing introductions. Not because they are famous. But because something about what they are — a phrase, an image, a way of saying things — has entered circulation without anyone pushing it.

That moment is not designed. It is built.

It is built by knowing where you operate from before anyone asks. It is built with language that carries enough truth inside it for others to adopt it, repeat it, make it theirs without asking permission.

It is built on a mattress melody — identity, territory, archetype — on which copy can rest and become transmissible.

Without the mattress, el colchón, copy floats. It sounds but it does not resonate. It is heard but it does not stay.

Thoms understood that folklore needs time to permeate. That it is not declared — it sediments. That an oral tradition takes generations to become something that feels collective.

We don’t have generations. But the principle is the same.

The brands that become inevitable are not the ones that shout loudest from the top. They are the ones that build something with enough truth inside it that people carry it with them. Repeat it. Pass it on.

Like an anthem everyone hums without remembering when they learned it. Like a meme everyone understands without anyone having explained it. Like a word invented by an anonymous librarian in 1846 that the whole world speaks today.

Folklore is not decreed or declared. It simply spreads.

I loved organic chemistry. I can’t remember a single formula.

Not one. Not the molecular structure of sodium carbonate, not the chains I used to draw with something close to pleasure. The notation is gone. All of it. And I don’t think that’s failure — I think that’s evidence.

Because what I do remember is the force behind the loss of an electron. The moment an atom cedes something — not as damage, not as subtraction — but as the move that makes it available for bonding. Sodium doesn’t lose an electron. It positions itself. It becomes ionic. It becomes structurally ready for a relationship that couldn’t exist while it was holding on to everything.

That stayed. The formulas didn’t.

And the difference between what stayed and what left is the entire problem.

When you’re a child, they push knowledge into you with a shoehorn. Tributaries of the Ebro. Visigoth kings. Molecular formulas presented as sequences to retain, not as forces to understand. You memorize the output of a reaction without ever feeling the reaction itself. You learn the shape of knowledge without touching its weight.

Now we do the same thing — at scale, at speed, with better tools.

We accumulate posts. Prompts. Inherited strategies. Frameworks someone else built for a problem we never sat with long enough to feel. We stack and stack, and we call it learning. We call it growth. Sometimes we even call it strategy.

But accumulation is not sovereignty.

Sovereignty doesn’t come from how much you carry. It comes from how clearly you can think when you’re carrying nothing. It’s the ability to operate from a position — not just about one. The difference between knowing the formula and understanding the bond.

I keep thinking about prompts. The way people collect them now — like recipes, like cheat codes. “Give me a prompt for positioning.” “Give me a prompt for brand voice.” As if a prompt were a tool.

A prompt is not a tool. A prompt is an instruction that only works if you already have the territory clear. Without territory, a prompt is a formula without comprehension. It’s a formula without chemistry. It produces output. It doesn’t produce meaning.

This is the same logic that made us memorize the tributaries of the Ebro. The same operating system: accumulate enough, and competence will follow. Gather the right inputs, and the right output is guaranteed. It’s efficient. It scales. And it produces a very specific kind of blindness.

The blindness of someone who can recite the map but can’t feel the terrain.

There’s a word I keep returning to: friction.

Friction is what most systems are designed to eliminate. Smooth onboarding. Frictionless experience. Seamless integration. We’ve turned the absence of friction into a value proposition.

But friction is not resistance. Friction is traction.

Without it, you slide. You accumulate velocity with no direction. You move fast and touch nothing. You produce and produce without ever metabolizing — and what doesn’t get metabolized doesn’t become structure. It becomes weight.

The education I received was frictionless in the worst way: information without confrontation, data without tension, knowledge that never required me to become anything in order to hold it. You could carry it all and remain exactly who you were before.

Real learning changes the carrier. That’s the friction. That’s the cost. And that’s what makes it sovereign.

I think we’re building a generation that confuses access with understanding.

Access to information. Access to tools. Access to frameworks, templates, strategies, even to intelligence itself — outsourced, on-demand, by the prompt. And none of it requires you to metabolize anything. None of it asks you to sit with the discomfort of not knowing. None of it demands friction.

So we accumulate.

We accumulate because it feels like progress. Because the pile grows and the pile is visible and visibility is the closest thing we have to proof. But the pile is not the person. The archive is not the mind. The prompt library is not the territory.

Sovereignty is what remains when you subtract the pile.

It’s the thing you can think from — not the things you’ve thought about.

I didn’t remember the formula for sodium carbonate. I remembered the feeling of not understanding it. And that feeling — that gap, that friction — taught me more about how knowledge works than the formula ever did.

The tributaries of the Ebro are gone. But I know what a river does when it meets resistance.

It doesn’t accumulate. It carves.

A few days ago I wrote a short note about brand aristocracy — brands that live inside a bubble of heritage, blessing themselves and calling it legacy.

To be fair, aristocracy isn’t the problem.

In culture — and in branding — aristocracies have often played an important role. They preserve craft, guard traditions, and keep certain standards alive. Museums need guardians.

But shifts rarely come from within. Real shifts tend to happen when aristocracy meets fresh blood — and a little plebeian friction. Because the real opposite of aristocracy isn’t the plebs.

It’s aristolazy.

What is Aristolazy?

Aristolazy is what happens when heritage turns into inertia, when legacy stops being a responsibility and becomes a cushion. It’s not laziness. It’s something more dangerous: comfort mistaken for stability.

Same narrative. Same players. Same mental model — regardless of what’s shifting outside the walls.

And the real risk isn’t stagnation. It’s the leverage quietly working against you while you’re busy protecting what used to work.

Success has a curious side effect. At some point, protecting the legacy quietly replaces questioning it.

What began as living strategy slowly turns into ritual.

And ritual, if left alone long enough, becomes costume.

That costume tends to become The Emperor’s new clothes. Brands stand naked — but with no one interested, or brave enough, to say it.

The Nouveau Riche

Of course, there are the nouveau riche too. Not rich in money. Rich in momentum. Brands that grew fast, discovered branding worked, and somewhere along the way started believing their own myth.

They didn’t inherit the codes. They bought them, memorized them, and replayed them. Now they wear them like armor — heavy, visible, and slowing them down.

The mismatch isn’t between old and new money. It’s between the volume and the signal. The logo on the sweater grows louder as the strategy underneath grows quieter.

They mistake speed for direction, and scale for significance. Aristolazy preserves rituals it no longer understands. The nouveau riche invent new ones and call it innovation. Both are forms of forgetting — just at different speeds.

And that speed has a cost: a fragile memory. They forget where they came from — and with it, the only thing that actually moved them forward.

The Plebs

And then, finally, there are the plebs.

Not poor brands. Hungry ones. Brands without pedigree, without permission, without a seat at the table. They are not trying to protect the museum.

They are trying to shift the culture.

Most of the time they are messy. Sometimes vulgar. Often unpredictable.

But every once in a while they do something aristocracies and nouveau riches rarely dare to do: they change the game. Because when you have no heritage to protect, you also have nothing to lose.

And that is often where cultural shifts begin.

Aristocracy preserves culture.

Plebeians move it.

That is the real threat. And the real thread.

The danger was never the plebs at the gate. The danger was always aristolazy — comfortable inside the walls, mistaking silence for safety.

Because walls don't keep history in.
They keep the future out.

Hay personas que entran en una habitación y no pasa nada.

Y hay otras que entran —y algo se desplaza.

No sabes muy bien qué es. No es la ropa. No es la voz. Ni siquiera es el talento.

Es otra cosa.

Una forma particular de ocupar el espacio. Algo que se reconoce antes de entenderse.

Cortázar lo sabía. Por eso inventó tres especies: las famas, los cronopios y las esperanzas.

Pero para lo que nos ocupa hoy solo importan dos.

Las famas son eficientes.

Llegan a tiempo. Hacen formularios. Guardan las llaves en el cajón correcto. Tienen protocolos para todo.

Las cosas funcionan.

Los cronopios, en cambio, pierden las llaves.

Llegan tarde. Se distraen mirando el reflejo de la luz en un vaso. Lloran con la música y no saben explicar por qué.

Las famas funcionan. El mundo premia a las famas.

Y sin embargo, ¿a quién recuerdas?

En branding ocurre exactamente lo mismo.

Las famas construyen marcas correctas.

Paletas aprobadas en comité. Mensajes validados por focus group. Estrategias diseñadas para no incomodar a nadie.

Todo está optimizado. Todo encaja. Todo podría pertenecer a cualquiera.

Las famas tienen prompt. Y el prompt les devuelve exactamente lo que pidieron.

Una marca perfectamente funcional. Una marca que no sorprende ni a quien la creó.

Los cronopios no tienen prompt.

Tienen frecuencia.

Una frecuencia tan específica, tan irreproducible, que el algoritmo no sabe dónde colocarlos.

No encajan en ninguna categoría. No optimizan bien. No escalan fácil.

A veces ni siquiera parecen una estrategia.

Y sin embargo… hay gente que los encuentra.

Sin campaña. Sin funnel. Sin media plan. Como si ya supieran que estaban ahí. Como si, en algún lugar, ya hubieran coincidido antes.

Andábamos sin buscarnos pero sabiendo que andábamos para encontrarnos.

Eso no es casualidad. Es sedimentación.

El branding que funciona de verdad se reconoce. Como reconoces a alguien en una habitación llena de gente sin saber exactamente por qué.

Antes de que hable.
Antes de que te diga quién es.

Hay algo — una frecuencia, un peso, una manera de ocupar el espacio — que ya te dijo todo lo necesario.

Las marcas cronopio funcionan así.

No te convencen ni optimizan el mensaje. Afinan la frecuencia hasta que solo llega quien tiene que llegar. Y eso — en un mundo de famas con decks de ochenta diapositivas y estrategias de contenido para doce plataformas — es el gesto más radical que puede hacer una marca.

Ser tan específica, tan inevitable, tan imposible de confundir… que no quepa en un prompt.

Y aun así, que haya alguien ahí fuera que la reconozca al instante.

Como si ya hubiera pasado antes.

Como si, de algún modo, ya supiera que iba a encontrarse con ella.

Durante años ha trabajado en algunas de las mejores series y películas como localizadora de cine. Buscando lugares donde otros, después, construyen historias.

Nació cuatro días antes que yo. Y hace poco ha vuelto al pueblo.

Ese pueblo pequeño. Marinero.

De esa misma clase de párvulos salió también un cantante de fama internacional. De los que tienen colonia propia y suenan en todas partes.

Tres compañeros de patio. Tres trayectorias hacia fuera.

Y entonces lo piensas.

No es el lugar. No es el tamaño. No es el código postal.

Hay algo más silencioso operando. Algo que empuja a algunos a salir de la misma habitación mirando en la misma dirección.

Es curioso.
Quién nos lo iba a decir.

El caso es que, a veces, te tropiezas con personas —y con marcas— que viven instaladas en la excusa: la del código postal, la del tamaño, la del mercado.

Como si el límite estuviera fuera. Como si todo dependiera del lugar de origen, del tamaño, de las cartas que te vienen dadas, del punto en el mapa.

Y, sin embargo, a veces la diferencia no está en lo que te rodea, sino en lo que decides sostener cuando nadie mira.

En cuánto tiempo eres capaz de permanecer incómodo. En cuánta fricción puedes tolerar sin moverte de tu sitio. En cuántas veces estás dispuesto a intentar decir lo mismo… pero mejor.

Porque hay trayectorias que no empiezan cuando sales del pueblo. Empiezan mucho antes. Empiezan el día que dejas de usar el contexto como coartada.

Y entiendes, de verdad, que algunas voces no salen porque tengan más espacio. Salen porque ya no caben dentro.

Hay una creencia instalada en el mercado: que el valor de un trabajo se mide por lo que se ve.

El número de páginas. Las horas invertidas. El grosor del documento. El tamaño del equipo. La herramienta final con el logo en portada.

El guachipei.

Y el problema no es el cliente que lo cree. El problema es el profesional que también.

Esta mañana tuve una reunión. Cincuenta minutos. Sin orden del día. Sin presentación. Sin documento que enseñar.

Llegué con cinco preguntas. Cinco llaves forjadas durante días pensando en una persona, en su método, en la distancia entre lo que comunica y lo que realmente tiene.

En algún punto de esa conversación, alguien con reconocimiento internacional —del que pocos en su sector pueden presumir— dijo en voz alta algo que probablemente nunca había formulado así.

Una verdad sobre su propio trabajo.

No salió de un formulario. No salió de un brief enviado la semana anterior.

Salió de saber exactamente qué puerta abrir, en qué momento, con qué presión.

Eso es pensamiento convertido en instrumento.

Y no se ve.

El pensamiento no nace en los árboles.

Se cultiva. Se afila. Se entrena durante años hasta que empieza a parecer natural.

Y precisamente entonces es cuando más vale.

Porque ya no parece trabajo. Parece intuición. Parece conversación. Parece que simplemente “se te da bien hablar con la gente”.

Ahí está la trampa.

Lo que fluye sin esfuerzo suele ser lo más difícil de construir. Y lo más difícil de cobrar.

Cuando alguien me contrata no me contrata para escribir. Me contrata para pensar antes de que él sepa qué pregunta hacerse.

La diferencia entre vender verbo y vender arquitectura verbal no está en el entregable.

Está en lo que ocurre antes.

En la reunión que parece conversación. En las preguntas que parecen curiosidad. En el silencio que parece pausa —pero es lectura.

Una reunión de inmersión no es un interrogatorio con estructura.

Es una sala donde alguien entra creyendo que va a contar su historia y sale habiendo descubierto algo que no sabía que sabía.

Eso tiene un nombre.

Se llama criterio.

Y el criterio no lleva guachipei.

El mercado paga por lo visible porque lo visible tranquiliza. Justifica la factura sin que nadie tenga que pensar demasiado.

Un logo tiene píxeles. Un manual tiene páginas. Un sistema verbal tiene secciones con títulos.

Pero lo que convierte ese sistema en inevitable — lo que hace que una marca deje de sonar a todos y empiece a sonar solo a ella — ocurrió antes.

En silencio. Sin testigos.

En el momento en que alguien pensó lo suficiente como para saber qué preguntar.

Por eso filtro con quién trabajo. No por elitismo. Por coherencia.

Si crees que lo que vale es el documento final, trabajarás conmigo incómodo desde el principio. Porque lo que cobro no es la escritura. Es el pensamiento que la hace inevitable.

Y eso no aparece en ninguna línea de presupuesto.

Pero se nota en todo lo demás.

¿cuántas veces has acariciado tu móvil en las últimas 72 horas?

No tocar. Acariciar. Deslizar la yema del dedo sobre el cristal con ese gesto suave, casi íntimo, que ya hacemos sin pensar.

Desde entonces no me la quito de la cabeza. Porque si lo piensas un segundo, solo uno, la cifra asusta un poco.

¿Cuántas veces?
¿Cuántos minutos acumulados?
¿Cuántas horas de piel contra pantalla?

¿Y a quien tienes al lado?

Antes las caricias tenían temperatura. Ahora tienen superficie. Y aunque no queramos verlo, se nota en cosas pequeñas. Mínimas.

Ayer fui a un cumpleaños.

Íbamos en el coche: mi hermano conduciendo, mi cuñada mirando algo en el móvil, y mi sobrina detrás conmigo, balanceando las piernas contra el asiento.

De repente empezó a cantar.

“yo quiero que me dessssss un besito nada massss…”

Solo el estribillo.

Alargándolo. Repitiéndolo. Saboreándolo.

Como hacen los niños cuando algo les gusta de verdad.

— ¿Quieres que te la busque, cariño? — dijo mi cuñada.

— ¡Siiiiii! ¡Ponla, mami!

Mi hermano sonrió por el retrovisor, medio divertido:

— Pero para que la cantes…

En cuanto empezó a sonar, pasó algo curioso.

Mi sobrina la siguió sin perderse. Sus padres se unieron… pero solo en el estribillo. Justo en el fragmento que ahora mismo vive en bucle por todas partes.

El coche tiró millas. Pero a mí ya se me había quedado la escena grabada.

Horas después, en el cumpleaños, alguien propuso el juego de siempre: reconocer canciones por los primeros acordes.

Cuando le dieron al play, la atmósfera cambió en cuestión de segundos.

Bastaron dos notas.

La gente no dudaba.
No esperaba al estribillo.

Entraban directamente en la canción entera.

De principio a fin.

Y mientras cantaban, iban apareciendo cosas que no caben en un clip: veranos, coches antiguos, noches concretas, personas que habían tomado otros caminos.

Y entonces entendí por qué la pregunta del principio no me soltaba.

No es solo que consumamos más rápido. Es que estamos entrenando otro tipo de relación. Con el contenido. Con la atención. Y, poco a poco, también entre nosotros.

Hay marcas que hoy viven casi exclusivamente en el vidrio.

Persiguen la viralidad de los 15 segundos.
El momentum.
El pico que detiene el scroll.

Y a veces funciona. Claro que funciona.

Pero ahí hay una trampa. Porque muchas de estas marcas están optimizando reconocimiento rápido sin construir memoria real.

Lo que parece visibilidad muchas veces es solo un gatillazo identitario.

Un estribillo que se olvida con el siguiente insta-hit. Sin primeros acordes reconocibles. Sin puente. Sin historia que compartir.

Y sin eso… no hay marca que aguante el paso del tiempo.

Lo que repetimos con el dedo termina reconfigurando cómo miramos, cómo escuchamos, cómo recordamos.

En esa fragmentación de la realidad de las marcas, de las personas, en formato clips de 15 segundos es algo que nos va a acabar por modelar comportamiento y pensamiento. Y eso sí que es una erosión de la identidad.

Por eso la pregunta sigue ahí, incómoda.

Un scroll más. Una certeza menos.
