I remember an image: newly hatched goslings following an Austrian man in boots around a garden.

Goslings follow the first moving figure they encounter during a very specific period of their development. It might be their mother.

It might be a pair of boots.

The gosling doesn’t care.

Not exactly.

The gosling can’t care yet.

Konrad Lorenz — the Austrian man — called this imprinting. During a sensitive period of development, the animal fixes on a reference and begins to follow it. It doesn’t compare. It doesn’t look for alternatives. It doesn’t open three tabs and benchmark mothers.

It sees.

It follows.

And something gets written.

What interests me about the goose isn’t that it mistook Lorenz for its mother. It’s that perhaps, before Lorenz, what we call mother didn’t fully exist yet.

There was something unfinished. Waiting for the world to complete it.

And then a pair of boots appears.

The boots don’t take the mother’s place. They help build it.

There are things we experience as natural without knowing why.

Ways of sitting at a table. Of filling a silence. Of knowing when someone important has entered the room. Of saying ‘we should catch up’ to someone you both know you never will.

Nobody had to explain them to you.

You saw. You followed. Something got written.

Then you learned words.

Serious.

Elegant.

Professional.

Expensive.

Cheap.

Brand.

Long before anyone explained to me what a brand was, I already knew how to recognise one. Or so I thought.

I’d seen hundreds. Thousands. Like you. Like anyone.

I knew luxury spoke in a whisper. That technology looked ahead. That craft needed hands. That banks smiled with just enough teeth. That serious companies had blue somewhere and that, if a typeface looked handwritten, it probably sold something made slowly.

Nobody taught me that class.

They didn’t need to.

There were geese ahead of me.

Years later, I learned longer words. Positioning. Archetype. Territory. Differentiation. Architecture. Verbal identity.

I learned to dissect the goose. Measure it. Explain why it walked where it walked.

It took me much longer to ask a simpler question:

What the fuck was I following?

We say a brand needs to differentiate itself within its category. So we do something perfectly logical. We look at the category.

Direct competitors. Indirect competitors. Emerging players. References. Trends. Codes.

We put them together on a slide. Which colours repeat. Which words. Which promises. Which tone. Which shapes. What space each one occupies and which space appears to have been left open.

We watch where all the geese are walking.

And then we ask a newly hatched brand to imagine where it wants to go.

That order interests me.

First, we show it the world.

Then we ask it to think outside it.

A category isn’t just the collection of brands you compete against. It’s a learned way of recognising what belongs and what doesn’t. What looks like an insurance company. What sounds like a consultancy. What is allowed to sell luxury. What an artificial intelligence brand looks like. Which words a bank can say without someone in the room starting to sweat.

Categories organise. And they’re useful. They let us recognise something before we fully understand it.

See.

Classify.

Follow.

The problem begins when we mistake that organisation for the nature of things. When “this is how it's recognised” quietly becomes “this is how it is”.

And “this is how it is” limits far more than a colour palette. It limits the thinkable.

Maybe that’s why some new brands look old from day one.

Not because they’re copying.

Copying would almost be reassuring. It requires an original, a decision and, somewhere along the way, an awareness that you’re reproducing something.

Imprinting happens earlier.

They are born inside a pre-existing idea of what a brand is and devote an extraordinary amount of talent, money and meetings to becoming a different version of something they never questioned.

To the left.

To the right.

A little faster.

With one yellow feather.

Different.

All the while, we keep walking behind the boots.

And then we’re surprised when, after analysing the same references, identifying the same codes and asking the same questions, we end up finding different gaps in the same line.

Maybe benchmarking doesn’t just study the category. Maybe it imprints it.

The part I can’t stop thinking about is that the goose doesn’t see the boots. It sees the world. And later, it recognises something that looks like a category.

A mother.

Or a pair of boots.

A brand.

Or a template.

Maybe differentiating a brand doesn’t begin by asking what everyone else is doing.

Maybe it begins a little earlier. By asking what we’ve learned to consider a brand in the first place.

What we take for granted when we say premium. Professional. Innovative. Approachable. Bold. What images appear before we can stop them. Which boots we’ve been following for years without ever looking down.

Konrad Lorenz died in 1989.

The geese kept walking.

That’s why, when a brand tells me it wants to be different, I don’t first look at where it wants to go.

I look at what it saw when it hatched.

Not bad as in wrong. Bad as in unripe.

They scrape the tongue. They tighten something behind your ears. They pull that face a kid makes when biting a plum too soon. And the first thing you want to do is spit them out.

Sometimes we do. Almost always.

Then, months later, someone says something close. But red now. Sweet. Bright. We get it right away and think: damn, good idea.

Yeah.

Could’ve been ours.

Some people think good ideas arrive finished.

Ripe, red, gleaming. The apple that drops into your lap while you nap under the tree.

The ones I remember came sour. Awkward. A little ugly. With that edge where you think maybe they weren’t much after all, and at the same time something in your gut won’t let you throw them out.

That something is a pain in your ass.

Because now you have to stay. To stop.

And we’re badly built for stopping.

We’ve grown used to the now. To asking an idea to prove, from day one, everything it might become. To answer for itself before it grows. To bring ROI, storytelling and a well-tied pair of booties so it can take those first steps.

If not, next.

And now that you can ask for an idea and get it back in ten seconds: round, red, ready to eat…

Who resists?

Go on, laugh at Eve and that bite of hers.

Everyone’s tree. Heavy with ripe fruit.

The problem with always eating sweet is that the palate goes dull.

We learn to distrust anything that scrapes. To spit out the sour before we know what it could’ve become.

The feed shifts it. And the algorithm blesses it.

So on a diet of likes, or the lack of them, there comes a point where nobody needs to take the green idea from you anymore.

You spit it out yourself.

And I’m telling you this because I think with machines. Several. Every day. A lot. And they’re extraordinarily good at taking me to the center.

That’s why I use them. I want to know where it is.

I want to see the probable answer. The word that comes next. The idea that statistically has every ticket to look like a good idea.

To rule it out.

Because the machine has no problem with ideas. It has a problem with ideas that don’t look like an idea yet. It reads noise where you, with luck, feel a prick.

And lately I chew on that prick a lot. Because it’s getting harder to feel.

More and more I see the same apple with a different sticker. The same post with a different profile photo. The same brand with a different naming. The same round little idea showing up on time to a conversation that started months ago.

Take it, and you’re not creative — you’re punctual.

And that punctuality worries me. Worries me that we reward it so much.

The machine doesn’t take the green idea from you. It just doesn’t fit its statistics. So it nudges you — kind words, kid gloves — toward the ripe.

The probable.

And the probable, when it’s everyone’s bet, is worth nothing. It turns into a place too common.

At rush hour.

Strategy doesn’t start with an answer.

It starts well before. With a question and the awkward silence it leaves behind. That stretch where you still don’t know. Where there’s no line. No concept. No three creative territories on a slide with their matching moodboards.

There’s a gap.

And the gap makes people nervous.

So we fill it. With the first idea that passes. With something that worked once. With an answer that sounds like an answer. Anything rather than admit we’ve spent three days staring at a green apple with no clue yet what the hell to do with it.

So the problem isn’t that the machine thinks for you. It’s that it takes you, gently, to the place where everyone already is. And a brand that reaches the place where everyone already is arrives late, even if it arrives first.

We think creating is about having ideas.

And it is.

The thing is, what costs — the heavy lifting — is bearing them. Living with an idea that’s still uncomfortable long enough not to kill it trying to make it presentable.

Not dressing it up. Not simplifying it. Not swapping it for another that shines sooner just because it shines.

Because some ideas need you not to understand them yet.

They need to sit badly a while. They need you to carry them in your pocket, take them out, turn them over again, forget them two days and find them again looking back at you from the table.

Training the palate for the sour is training judgment.

It’s not patience. It’s not about enjoying what scrapes. It’s about knowing why it scrapes. Telling a bad idea from a green one.

Knowing green isn’t worse than red.

It’s before.

And maybe strategy is exactly that: knowing what not to spit on the floor yet.

In it, my forearm is covered in ink. An orange eye. Blue lines tracing the veins. A red stroke crossing the wrist as if it had decided to change direction halfway through.

It wasn’t a tattoo. It wasn’t a performance. The notebook simply ran out before the idea did.

We like to think good ideas arrive complete. Neatly packaged. Ready to become a slide deck, a strategy, a company, a book.

They rarely do.

Good ideas are excessive. They spill. They leak into margins, conversations, sleepless nights, paper napkins, voice notes, walls, arms. They refuse to stay where they first appeared.

Maybe that’s because we’ve misunderstood creativity. We describe it as a mental faculty — a talent for generating concepts, solving problems, connecting dots.

I’m not so sure.

Some days, creativity behaves much more like a liquid. It doesn't ask for permission. It looks for the next available surface.

Living ideas always become larger than the container they were born in.

Which makes me wonder whether the problem isn’t a lack of creativity. It’s an obsession with containers.

Before we even know what we’re trying to think, we ask where it will fit. Is this a carousel? A keynote? A newsletter? A prompt? A pitch deck? How many words, how many slides, how many seconds?

We no longer begin with the idea. We begin with its packaging. As if the first question were no longer What wants to exist? but What format does this belong to?

The container has quietly become the starting point of imagination.

And containers are never neutral. A spreadsheet thinks differently from a notebook. A slide deck thinks differently from an essay. A feed thinks differently from a walk. They don’t just hold ideas — they teach ideas what shape they’re allowed to take.

We’ve never had so many tools for producing creativity. Frameworks. Canvases. Prompts. Templates. Optimization systems. And yet creativity has rarely looked so well behaved.

We don’t ask where an idea wants to go. We ask how to make it perform. How to make it fit. How to make it publishable before we’ve even understood what the hell it was trying to become.

It’s like asking a river which spreadsheet it belongs in.

Creativity isn’t the ability to produce more ideas. It’s the willingness to let an idea remain larger than its first container.

Maybe that’s why I keep coming back to that photograph. I don’t see a painted arm. I see proof that the notebook simply wasn’t enough.

And I wonder how many extraordinary ideas never become extraordinary because they spend their whole lives trying to fit inside a container they were never meant to inhabit.

For a while I thought my job was about finding better ideas, about getting to the one idea that ordered everything sooner and further than anyone else.

Today I think it’s about something far less glamorous and far harder: creating the conditions under which someone can choose them.

Because there’s a part of strategy that never shows up on the invoice, that doesn’t get billed as a line item, and that, even so, decides whether everything else was worth anything at all.

It isn’t research, it isn’t writing, it isn’t building a concept. It’s moving a mind.

Moving a mind is the slowest thing you do in the whole process, because the best decisions almost never stall for lack of information. They stall from an excess of vertigo.

The client, nearly always, already knows.

Knows what brand they want to build, knows what tone speaks for them, knows what they should leave behind.

They recognise it the moment it's in front of them. What they don’t know — and this changes everything — is whether they’ll be able to live there.

That’s why I believe less and less in convincing.

Convincing implies the other person is wrong, and that isn’t where I start: I start from the fact that most of my clients already know the answer the moment they see it — they just can't see it yet on their own. And that the only thing they’re missing isn’t a better argument, but enough ground under their feet to take the step.

So I talk more about mindset than typefaces. I dismantle fears more often than I present work. And I spend more time asking what would have to happen for this to stop scaring them than defending the idea itself.

Because a brilliant strategy handed to a mind still living in “maybe” is, quite simply, a dead strategy.

“Maybe” is a curious place, because it’s almost never a real doubt. It’s usually a yes that hasn’t grown legs yet.

The job isn’t to push that yes — pushing it only frightens it more — but to build the road to it: to widen the frame the client is looking through, to shift the axis, to change the place they’re seeing the problem from.

Only then does a decision appear that no longer needs defending, because all of a sudden it looks like the only one that ever made sense. It looks inevitable.

That’s why I’ll take a “fuck” over a “how lovely” any day. Every time.

“How lovely” usually means everything still fit, comfortably, inside the same head the client walked into the meeting with. “Fuck” means that head just moved into a bigger room.

I don’t know if you know that sound where you come from.

The sharpener would arrive on a motorbike or a bicycle. You didn’t see him first. You felt him. A thin whistle that slipped under the door, climbed up your spine and settled behind your eyes before your brain had time to name it.

By the time you turned your head, your body had already decided.

You’d grab the scissors, the knife that wouldn’t cut, whatever had lost its edge around the house. You’d do it without blinking. Instinctively. Because your body already knew what to do before your brain caught up.

Hold that whistle. We’ll come back to it.

A friend confessed to me the other day that she’s a reggaeton fan. But in the closet.

Her playlist is indie. Curated. Intelligent.

Reggaeton, next to it, looks like a stain on the record. Like playing it out loud, no headphones, would put her in a box labelled in permanent marker: immature, no taste, too easy to like.

At first it made me laugh, because I’ve been listening to reggaeton since before I knew it was called reggaeton. I enjoy an evening at the opera just as much as I enjoy a sunrise dripping with sweat in the afterparty.

Maybe that’s why the story stayed with me. Because I realised my friend’s issue wasn’t a dissonance caused by a trained musical ear.

It wasn’t about taste at all. It was shame.

You could hear it in the way she lowered her voice when she said it. Like she was admitting to something slightly dirty. Something that, if said too loud, might make her less serious in someone else’s eyes.

Taste looks at the work.

Shame, on the other hand, looks first to see who’s watching. And depending on who that is, it says out loud: “I’m not one of them.”

It dresses up as class. Even if saying it means denying yourself and building a closet to the measure of your prejudices.

And I get it.

The signalling around reggaeton is obvious. After all, it’s the devil’s music with shitty lyrics — according to the experts of the Royal Academy of Good Musical Taste.

And if by now you still think this is about reggaeton, this is about something else.

It’s about who holds the power to decide whether what you feel is legitimate or not. About who gets to tell you whether what you feel deserves to take up space out loud, or should stay in the back room, headphones on, door shut.

It’s about that uncomfortable zone where something moves you before you can justify it. Before you can defend it with a citation, a review, an award, an institution, or a respectable enough lineage.

Because the funniest thing is, even those experts, the ones who hate the genre with all their might, get their bones moving when a track comes on.

They do. Even if their intellect shakes its head to deny that movement.

Don’t raise that eyebrow — this isn’t me talking. It’s science.

In 2021, neurosurgeon Jesús Martín-Fernández and his team put twenty-eight people with no musical training into a functional MRI scanner and played them fragments of four genres: classical, reggaeton, electronic and folk.

The study used only instrumental fragments. Not a single word. Naked.

They measured what lit up.

The result?

Reggaeton was, of the four, the one that most activated the auditory-motor network. Reggaeton. Not a symphony.

But that wasn’t what stopped the team cold.

What left them open-mouthed was something else: even with the body completely still, reggaeton lit up the basal ganglia. The oldest thing we carry inside us. The structures that read rhythm and start predicting the beat before a single muscle moves.

Because the stimulus is so rhythmic, so persistent, that the brain begins to anticipate when the next beat will drop. And when it does, the body is already braced to move. No movement yet. Just the readiness.

It doesn’t pass through the cortex where good taste is debated and criteria are signed off.

It processes downstairs. In the basement. In the mechanisms we share with those who danced around fires before the word “fire” existed.

The body prepares to move before you decide to move. Before you have time to judge whether that movement is legitimate or not. Before you analyse anything.

Are you surprised?

Good. Now let’s see what happens when you put the right words to that rhythm.

Puerto Rico. September 2017. Hurricane Maria devastates the island.

The government declares that the number of deaths from that catastrophe stands at 64.

In mid-2018, a Harvard study is published in the New England Journal of Medicine. It analyses excess deaths between September 20 and December 31, 2017, in Puerto Rico.

The figure: 4,645.

When the news breaks, people start placing empty shoes in the square in front of the Capitol. In three days, they leave more than three thousand pairs.

Two systems. Two ways of measuring reality.

And a cemetery of shoes.

Months pass. Nothing happens. Nothing. Until, suddenly, everything explodes.

July 2019.

889 pages of a private Telegram chat are leaked.

Inside, the Governor of Puerto Rico, Ricardo Rosselló, and eleven of his top officials exchange thousands of messages. Jokes. And something else. Something that opens a wound that never quite closed.

In that chat, the participants mock the dead of Hurricane Maria.

The leak spreads like wildfire. The streets move from disbelief to outrage. And that’s when three people decide to get together and lock themselves in a studio to record a track.

In less than twelve hours, they record and mix it.

René Pérez Joglar — Residente — put the verb to the accusation. Verse by verse, he described corruption with the precision of someone who’s been sharpening that blade for years.

Benito Antonio — Bad Bunny — stopped his European tour and stepped into the mud in the name of a generation: the “I won’t be pushed around” generation.

And Ileana Cabrera — iLe — who, in her own words, had been waiting her whole life for a moment like this, provided the hook: the chorus that turned rage into something singable, repeatable, chantable.

On the morning of July 17th, just as the streets were beginning to fill again, they drop the song for free on YouTube.

Afilando los cuchillos. Sharpening knives.

A song that doesn’t open with a beat. It opens with a whistle.

Yes. That whistle.

The sharpener’s whistle.

When they released the song, they didn’t have to explain a thing. The island already knew the code.

Just as I recognise it, or anyone who’s ever heard that whistle.

On July 22nd, between eight hundred thousand and a million people filled the widest highway in San Juan, the Expreso Las Américas.

Nearly a third of the island’s population moving.

Motorbikes patrolling at night. Black flags. Cooking pots. Perreo in the face of tear gas. A crowd moving before it could even fully explain itself. Like someone reaching for the scissors when they hear the whistle, before they understand what they’re doing.

Twelve days after the first protest in front of La Fortaleza, Rosselló capitulated. It was midnight on July 24th. Never before — not under Spanish rule, not under American rule — had a governor of Puerto Rico been ousted by direct street pressure.

That night, a governor fell. And an illusion too: the illusion that history changes when someone convinces others with arguments.

Sometimes history is rewritten when you manage to synchronise enough bodies at once. Sometimes all you need is for a whistle to stop being domestic.

There is always something that puts you in the closet. Something that makes the box seat wrinkle its nose.

Before, it was the blues. Jazz. Hip hop. Rock. Camarón’s flamenco. The Beatles.

Everything that once smelled of “this has enough standing to be one of mine”. Until, suddenly, it does.

And then it happens.

What was demonized starts being accepted across the board. And the cultural arbiters look you straight in the eye, place a hand solemnly on their chest, and say:

“Respectability is this. You can now press play on that song, contemplate that sculpture, read that book. That movement and the smile it brings to your face — they are now legitimate. Endorsed. Certified. Your experience is authorised.”

The box seat always arrives late. Five minutes late, deliberately.

Long enough for risk and judgment to disappear. Long enough for the rhythm and the narrative to sync up.

Although your basal ganglia knew it first.

The tribunal always appears.

The box seat. The class. The category.

The little voice that doesn’t ask “what is this doing to me?” but “what does it say about me that this is happening?”.

The body doesn’t wait for permission. It never did.

But sometimes you feel you need someone with cultural authority to allow what moves you.

Purists. Pedigree. The pulpit.

Someone to confirm that you’re not losing value in front of everyone else when the beat drops and your body moves. When your head turns at the whistle.

That kind of knowledge has no certificate. It doesn’t need it.

It has the pulse that lives beneath.

We start as toddlers: every element within its set, the block into its slot. Calling things by their name, even when the names are left orphaned of meaning and the meanings never get named.

We categorize, we label, Dymo gun in hand.

When they categorize you and you don’t accept the category, you do one of two things: you swallow it whole, or you start, from the margins, building your own boxes. The ones that never close.

They categorized me, of course.

First as a girl: communion dress, pink bike with a basket, when what I wanted was a BMX, and that you’re prettier when you’re quiet. The category had decided for me before I knew how to ask. But the desire was already made of clay. It was already looking for the dirt slope, not the paved sidewalk.

Girl. Daughter. Sister. Student. Friend. Girlfriend. Partner. Bankrupt. Founder. Insert here the label that was hardest to let go.

They categorized me so much that, without a label hanging on me, I didn’t know who I was.

Then I had to carry them. Live up to them. Because labels aren’t worn: they’re obeyed.

They categorized even my sensibility. And they graded it.

When I was small, I wanted to play like Stevie Wonder. To smile like him, and have others smile back at me as wide as I did watching him arpeggiate.

I wanted to be Stevie.

But that desire walked into the conservatory and came out turned into exams. Scales. A jury. The conservatory was to my musical instinct what the pink bike was to the BMX: it took a shape that didn’t fit the mold and forced it into a slot that was never its own.

I complied.

I complied with the exams until I thought I’d amortized the instrument.

Nobody called it that, but the math was there. That black piano leaning against my bedroom wall reminded me that the size of my urge to quit was inversely proportional to the cost of quitting, in terms of disappointment and return on investment, according to the table I’d drawn on staff paper long before I knew what an amortization schedule was.

Every year added hours, exams, expectations, and money. Every year made it harder to ask whether it was still mine.

Because there comes a point when you no longer continue out of desire. You continue because you’ve invested too much to walk away.

A move and a divorce made me feel the cost was charging interest. Slowly I realized the debts I was taking on weren’t mine. Except for a handful.

Most belonged to the labels: the ones squeezing me from outside and the ones I took on from within, straining to fill them.

A first year of music theory. Theory only. Not touching the instrument. Talk about a trial by fire. But I thought: with two years of theory and one of piano I’ll have all the offbeat quavers I need to build my own Superstition.

It never happened.

Because categories do more than order. They also shape. Wear down. Prune. And when you stay inside one too long, you end up mistaking sensibility for compliance.

The category taught me to read scores. Little by little I stopped playing it for myself: I began to execute, with nothing running through me, to be validated by a jury.

Until one day I discovered the cost hadn’t been the piano. Or the hours. Or the money. It had been that part of me. The one that wanted to play offbeat before someone turned the desire into a file.

The file kept the piano.
The offbeat came with me.

Because that was what had hooked me when I was barely knee-high and didn’t belong to the instrument: the instrument was just the slot they shoved it into.

My Superstition never sounded on a piano, but it sounds in everything I do. Still not landing where the beat expects it, so it can come in offbeat.

Because labels should be like that syncopated quaver. A box that never fully closes.

“I found this in my notes. It’s good. But I don’t know if it’s mine.”

She didn’t know if it had come from a conversation, a series, a book, a newsletter, or a machine. And honestly, it didn’t matter. Because the interesting question was never where it came from. The question was another one: what does this idea connect to inside you?

Silence.

Not because she couldn’t remember the source. Because she couldn’t remember the thread. She didn’t know what other ideas it joined, what problem it was trying to solve, what inner conversation had provoked it, where it was taking her.

The idea was there. But it seemed to have arrived complete. Like a found object.

Ideas have a history.

We don’t always remember where we first saw them, and it doesn’t much matter. No idea appears in a vacuum. We read, we listen, we copy, we mix, we forget. What matters isn’t the origin. It’s the mark the journey leaves.

The ideas that end up being yours rarely stay intact. They get contaminated. They mix with other readings, contradict themselves, strain against experience. They lose pieces, gain others, until they deform and come to resemble whoever thinks them more than whoever formulated them first.

That’s why some ideas you can trace backward. Not all the way to the origin, necessarily. But to the process.

You can explain what conversation activated them, what book gave them language, what experience made them inevitable, what contradiction forced them to evolve. You can pull the thread and it keeps appearing — like Ariadne’s, the thread that lets you walk the labyrinth in reverse.

Others, no.

Others arrive finished. Brilliant, polished, perfectly encapsulated. But you pull on them and nothing appears. No connections. No obsessions. No questions. No bridges. Just the sentence. As if it had landed directly on the page.

And that’s where the difference begins between repeating an idea and having thought it. Because thinking isn’t arriving at a conclusion. Thinking is knowing how to find your way back to it.

And building that road has a price.

Not a metaphor. A literal price.

We’re used to talking about ideas as if they were vapor.

As if they appeared from some abstract place called creativity. But thinking is a physical process. It burns glucose. It burns oxygen. It burns time. It burns your body. Every new connection has to force its way through a network that didn’t exist before. And forcing a path always costs energy.

The brain weighs roughly 2% of the body and yet consumes close to 20% of all the energy we spend. Around twenty constant watts. A bulb burning inside the skull.

Every time an idea moves, millions of neurons exchange electrical and chemical signals. Every connection has a cost. Every bridge burns fuel. Every crossing leaves a mark.

When you work those connections again and again, you become a contortionist. Not of the concept. Of the process.

A contortionist doesn’t master a posture because they’ve seen it. They master it because they remember every fall. The body keeps memory of each failed attempt, each loss of balance, each movement that didn’t work before finding the one that did.

Something similar happens with ideas.

When you return to an idea you’ve genuinely thought, you don’t repeat a routine. You come back with memory. You can explore variations. You can strain it. You can take it to new places. You can answer questions you’d never asked yourself. Because you know the terrain underneath.

Whoever copied the posture has the final photograph.

They might even get the applause. But they have none of the falls. And at the first variation — the first question the script didn’t account for — the spell breaks. There’s no memory of stumbling to pull from. No journey. No bridges.

The first time you hear one of your own concepts in someone else’s mouth, you doubt yourself.

Maybe it’s the red car.

You learn a word and suddenly it’s everywhere. You buy a red car and half the city is driving one. You name something and start seeing it repeated on every corner. Convergence, coincidence, the trap of attention suddenly hunting for what you’ve just learned to see.

Maybe that’s all it is.

Or maybe there’s something underneath, more uncomfortable. Because when an idea has been with you a long time, you develop an ear for it. You recognize its shape even when it changes clothes: other examples, other references, other words. And your shape underneath. And then the real doubt arrives.

Did we get to the same place by different roads? Are we looking at the same thing and naming it alike? Or did someone mistake proximity for authorship?

You can’t always know. But over time you learn to tell one thing apart: when an idea has roots and when it only has surface.

So let’s go back to the price.

A study estimated that transmitting information across the cortex burns far more energy than computing it. Not quite the same as thinking — but the ratio stays with you: moving something costs more than producing it. Connecting more than concluding. It costs 35 times more.

A penny for your thoughts.

I suspect the math falls short. The conclusion costs a penny. The bridges cost thirty-five.

Because the conclusion is the visible part. The result. The sentence. What anyone can repeat.

The bridges are something else.

They’re the invisible connections that hold the idea up. The associations. The contradictions. The readings. The mistakes. The questions that made it possible to reach it.

That’s the seal. And the deal.

Not the idea. That’s the cheap part.

Your seal, the real deal, is the energy burned building the bridges. The heat accumulated in every connection. The thermal trace of having walked the road so many times you can return to it in the dark.

It’s the wax seal pressed while it’s still hot.

Queen Elizabeth II.

Not in records or stadiums. In something stranger: recognition, reach, the ability of a single face to travel across coins, tea towels, mugs and postage stamps without losing its shape.

Years later I looked it up.A brand consultancy had valued the British monarchy at forty-four billion pounds. The number isn’t the interesting part. The split is.

Eighteen billion was tangible: palaces, jewels, land, assets. Twenty-six billion was intangible: the value of simply being the institution. More than half the worth sat in the part nobody could touch.

Hold that thought, because the entire argument lives inside that statistic.

Every brand has two layers. The surface. And the root.

The surface is everything that can be stretched: products, formats, campaigns, collaborations, merchandise, distribution.

The root is everything that can’t: meaning, identity, legitimacy, relationship, belief.

Most branding conversations collapse those two layers into one. That’s where the trouble starts. Because a brand doesn’t fail when it stretches its surface. It fails when it stretches its root as if it were surface.

The Crown is one of the most elastic brands in history precisely because it understands the distinction. It stretches the surface to absurdity. Tourism. Documentaries. Merchandise. Scandals. Divorces. Netflix.

The surface bends endlessly. The root doesn’t move.

The King is dead. Long live the King.

Bodies change. The shape holds.

The Papacy operates under a similar physics.

Different faces. Different centuries. Different political realities. Same claim. Maximum adaptation on the outside. A declared this part doesn’t move on the inside.

That’s what institutions understand that individuals often don’t. Elasticity isn’t the ability to become anything. Elasticity is the ability to stretch without losing the thing that made you recognisable in the first place. And that raises a more interesting question.

Not how famous a brand is. Not how rich. Not how visible. How elastic. And whether it knows which layer it’s stretching. Because once you see brands through that lens, you start noticing the same pattern everywhere.

Some organisations protect the root and commercialise the surface. Others commercialise both. The difference doesn’t show up immediately. Every stretch comes back looking clean. Until one doesn’t.

And that’s where the case of one of the most elastic brands I’ve studied up close begins.

Because elasticity becomes most interesting at the point where it stops looking like strength and starts looking like deformation.

They ban playing ball the same way they ban thinking outside the box. Funny, considering “disruption” is what everybody sells. Or asks of you. Real disruption is almost never what people dare to do.

I’ve been seeing it clearly these days. Madrid does that to you when you come from a village. Your eyes fill with stimulus, concerts, conversations, nights that still seem to want something. And watching, listening, talking, you realise there are more kids wanting to kick the ball than ever.

The difference is that now the code, the algorithm, the pattern, the template slowly clip their wings — and bury the want in them.

That’s why I stopped when I saw this sign.

Guaje is what we call a kid in Asturias. A word from a language with no official status. A language that survives because people keep speaking it. On the streets. In the valleys. Around kitchen tables. In places where life happens before institutions get a chance to name it.

And there it was.

On an official road sign.

Not niños.

Not children.

Guajes.

A tiny act of cultural stubbornness. The kind I like.

Because the most dangerous things rarely disappear all at once. They disappear word by word. Game by game. Street by street. Until one day everybody is speaking correctly and nobody is saying anything alive.

Marketing does something similar. It fills the village square with signs.

Don’t write long.

Don’t lose attention.

Don’t go off-script.

Don’t make people think too hard.

Don’t risk being misunderstood.

The result is a world full of permission and very little play.

The brands that matter are built where culture, play and philosophy cross — by people willing to spray BAN BANNING across the wall and hand the street back to those it always belonged to.

Because creativity isn’t cool. That’s the lie they sell you. Creativity is rebellion with a purpose, practicing itself. Most days it feels closer to skating on a bad knee — walking the edge of a blade — than floating through clouds.

It’s risk. It’s friction. It’s refusing to let inertia, comfort or fear decide what gets built and what doesn’t. It’s running flat out after something that tastes like purpose.

A bruised knee. A chipped tooth. A scar or two. Scars, or stripes — from the skateboard they feel the same. Proof that you were here. Proof that you played.

The streets belong to us. We never left.

I spent Monday morning at a client’s office. We’ve been working together for months, almost all of it on screens, and he cleared the day so we could sit without an agenda and close what we’d left open. We had lunch: grilled artichoke flowers, Barbastro tomato with the good oil, a brasa-grilled turbot fit for a maharaja.

I let myself be looked after — and anyone who knows me knows I’m not easily won over, that I’m more giver than receiver. But I let myself be carried.

We didn’t go to lunch alone. He brought along his point person from the team. And watching how he treated her told me more than everything in the files they sent me back at the start. That is leading.

I speak from privilege and it’s worth saying out loud: the privilege of being born on the good side, of owning my own time, of not handing over my judgment to the highest bidder. I enjoy closing a deal as much as I enjoy saying no to a project I know isn’t for me. For me, that is also leading.

Tuesday was another story.

I put on my raw linen wrap jumpsuit — judoka-style, in case things went south and I had to put someone in a hold, and because it was hot as hell. I took a taxi (I wasn’t getting on the metro in that sun) and arrived early to map the place before the event began. There I ran into the person who had invited me. He planted two kisses on me at the door. So good to have you here. We took the service lift up to the loft on the sixth floor. That is also leading.

The event began. Two heavyweights of the industry played masters of ceremony. Let’s say they work with the kind of brands we all dream of and brag about — in the closet, in the garage, in the feed. The room filled up. Forty-nine international creatives. And me.

Brilliant people. People playing Champions League. And also people working with smaller clients, mid-size ones. Craft studios, circuit voices, names you recognize and names you don’t yet. The whole spectrum.

I spent the night listening.

I didn’t go quiet out of fear, or out of feeling out of place. And I didn’t go quiet out of precision either, though that too — live English without two beers wasn’t going to land where I wanted it. I went quiet, above all, to listen. I haven’t been at this that long.

And though I speak from the privilege I’ve already named — my own time, judgment that isn’t for sale, partners in mind who aren’t on a payroll — precisely because of that, it was my turn to keep quiet. To let the voices of those who’ve walked more of this road, who carry the same weight without the net I have, map out in their own words what I suspect is endemic. I didn’t want to leave an echo. I wanted to receive one.

That is also craft. Knowing when privilege is exercised by speaking and when it’s exercised by listening.

And listening from the other side I noticed something I’d already sensed but had never seen operate among strangers: the ache was the same. Transversal. The same in the one signing work for global brands as in the one running a small studio.

The system wears you down equally from inside the premium pen as from outside it. Exhaustion. Quiet fatigue. The sense of feeding something that drains you.

It wasn’t a cliché. Clichés go lukewarm the moment they’re named. This one didn’t. It recognized itself without needing to be explained, and that is exactly what tells a room with skin apart from a room with a script.

What I’ve been trying to put in order for days is this: we’ve confused validation with recognition.

Validation asks for volume, speed, noise — and we hand it our work in exchange for the next spike in visibility. Recognition asks for something else, much more expensive: time, witnesses, someone who, after months of work and a flight, tells you it’s taken you ten years to get here. But how good that you came. No sprint produces that sentence.

In Spanish we say comerse la rana — to eat the frog. A beautiful way of saying you kissed a supposed prince who turned out to be a frog, and you swallowed him anyway.

We all eat the occasional frog. I’ll grant that. But if you have frog for starter, frog for main, and frog for dessert because that’s how the numbers add up, good for you — it works. Only it has a cost. And the cost doesn’t show on the balance sheet because we don’t know how to count it. It shows up as absence. It shows up as that night in the loft, where forty-nine brilliant people quietly admitted they were tired of their own success.

On the way back to the hotel, part walking part metro, and enjoying a cigarette, I thought about how messed up the world is: that we all loathe it and keep feeding what drains us.

This morning I went back to my client’s office. We closed a new project, talked about the next ones, and he drove me to the airport. In the car I understood what I’d been failing to put in order for two days.

Between Monday and today a whole room of international exhaustion fit inside that room. But the week wasn't decided by that — not by the loft, not by the names on the billboard. It was decided by the two ends. The skin of a client who brings his point person along to lunch because that is leading. The skin of someone who waits for you at the door with two kisses and a so good to have you here. The skin of the drive to the airport.

Maybe the verb we keep in progress without ever conjugating is to choose. Choose the client. Choose the pace. Choose who you share a room with and who you don’t. Choose when to get on the plane and when to get off the project. Choose to eat one frog or three. The word lives in every manifesto. The verb, almost never.

But when it gets exercised, it leaves skin.

It takes you to lunch. It takes you to the airport. It opens doors you didn’t ask for. It gives you two kisses at the entrance and a so good to have you here worth more than any fee. It tells you ten years late, but how good.

The rest — the noise, the manifesto, the quarter, the three-course frog — is words in progress.

I learn more from a poem by Lorca, and from what reading it does to my identity, than from the latest personal branding book you have to read or else. Because if you don’t, your thinking won’t fit in a quote. And if it doesn’t fit in a quote, it can’t be shared.

Business schools. Schools of thought. Schools. Everything gets rule-bound. Everything gets standardized. Everything gets packed into neat boxes that fit in an Excel sheet and export to a PowerPoint. Those slides also fit the grand words we all repeat — like synergy. A synergy that doesn’t exist outside the slide where it was drawn.

And it makes sense. Because your thinking, yours, is worth nothing unless you can cite someone as collateral. Someone you feel articulated, in better words, what you think but can’t yet name. Someone who can validate you.

That’s how it works.

If your thinking can’t be filed inside a mental frame, a thinking model, or a framework (which sounds like a higher invoice) that someone articulated a few decades ago to fit reality into a mold that was theirs… good luck with that.

That’s how authority gets transferred. That’s how responsibility gets outsourced. That’s how we forget to think in depth, to push back, to question. We’ve shed our skin: we went from producing thought to translating what others thought before us.

We translate, and we let ourselves be translated along the way. Even if it’s more lost in translation than found in meaning, in terms of identity.

The scenario

Look around you. Look at your feed. Look at your inbox.

Brands now hand us everything pre-translated. Well-chewed. So nothing gets lost. So everything gets standardized. So everything scales. So everything fits into a function, into a mathematical operation.

And then we believe we’re making magic.

We translate trends. We translate content for the algorithm and algorithms for the audience. We translate what we feel into slide-speak. We translate what we know into client-speak. We translate what the client tells us on Monday into the brief we sign on Friday. We live translating.

And when everything is translation, there’s nothing original left to translate. Just copies of copies.

We keep operating with other people’s thoughts to define a reality that isn’t yours, but theirs. Another context, other vectors, another window in time. Athens. Boston. The seventies. The nineties. The one before this thing you're living right now even existed.

But context shifts, decades pass, and yet synaptic absolutism still reigns: the same connections, the same quotes, the same molds. As if thinking meant repeating the neural pathways someone else installed.

And I’m not a “no-past” girl. This isn’t about denying the past. It’s about not letting yourself be reduced to what others have already named, thought, or dreamed.

Translate vs. Transduce

There’s a concept in physics and biology that fascinates me: transduction.

Cells do it all the time. They convert an external stimulus — the bass of a song — into an internal signal — your smile, your feet keeping the beat. They’re waves, and yet they become chemistry.

That’s what it means to transduce: to be crossed by something and come out converted into something else, without ceasing to be what you were. The wave doesn’t translate into feet. The wave becomes your feet.

When you think outside the boxes of the standard someone else defined, you have two options: translate or transduce.

Translating is what keeps words that no longer mean anything to anyone — because nobody remembers what they actually meant — circulating with the backing of the quote.

The quote gets repeated, restacked, printed on a t-shirt, attributed right if you’re lucky, wrong most of the time, doesn’t matter. The phrase no longer means what it meant. It just circulates. Fast.

Transducing is something else.

Brands get translated into their most scalable, most replicable version, until their real meaning becomes a footnote.

The brands that transduce, and let themselves be transduced, don’t fall into that trap. They operate from another frame, from another altitude. And that altitude changes the pressure, changes the light, changes the air you breathe. And if you’ve ever climbed a real peak, you know this isn’t a metaphor.

Culture can’t be translated

Brands want to transcend. They want to permeate culture. And they want culture to cross back through them. They want to be transducers.

But now culture is being squeezed into a text box. And made scalable as a concept. And turned into a commodity, sold to the highest bidder.

Sad, but true.

Brands factorize culture.

They break it down into its minimum operable parts — format, hook, trend, beat, hashtag — and recombine them into something that looks like culture, exports like culture, measures like culture, but no longer crosses you, transforms you, or changes you.

Trying to turn culture into something that fits the format is a waste of time. No matter how much taste and curated have become the new synergy and essence. In five years, or five months, they’ll make us laugh, or rage, but in the meantime, they scale.

I find life a bit bland. From taking away the salt and the substance, we’ve lost the savor. Right when everything is as liquid as the screen you scroll through on loop, while your finger slides on its own. Right when we want to put more dams in the sea.

We pretend to turn culture into a commodity for the market. The funny thing is, you can’t fence a field. You can’t dam the middle of the ocean.

No matter how hard you try to reduce it to a frame, to an algorithmic function, to a prompt, culture is one of those invisible forces. One that won’t be caught, drawn, or corseted. One that exists only to cross through you.

And if you’re awake — awake enough — it’s precisely the force that, when it crosses you, doesn’t leave you in the same position, or in the same place.

Everything fits in boxes. What pretends to be culture, the brands that factorize it, schools of thought, business schools. They standardize. And whatever falls outside the box gets treated as a footnote. If that.

Deep drag. Long sip. Bitter.

Because coffee, like thinking, is better when you take out the sugar.

In 1991, a report from the European Economic Community recommended repealing that law.

The official reason: to harmonize the market. The predictable consequence: manufacturers would be able to sell keyboards without the Ñ. And since almost no one was going to manufacture two models for a single country, keyboards with the Ñ would tend to disappear.

No one wrote “we want to erase a letter.” What was written was: we want to remove a trade barrier. But the trade barrier was a letter. And the letter was alive in the mouths of five hundred million people.

The Real Academia Española responded in May 1991 in El País: a grave attack on the language. García Márquez, who had been a Nobel laureate since 1982, wrote:

It is outrageous that the European Community has dared to propose to Spain the elimination of the ñ for the sake of commercial convenience. The perpetrators of such abuse should know that the ñ is not an archaeological relic, but exactly the opposite: a cultural leap of a Romance language that left the others behind by expressing with a single letter a sound that in other languages still requires two.

The fight lasted two years. On April 23rd, 1993, World Book Day, the Spanish government passed a Royal Decree shielding the Ñ in keyboards, invoking the Treaty of Maastricht. Cultural exceptions. Culture takes precedence.

That’s the story as it’s usually told. And it’s true. But it’s only a tenth of what was actually happening.

First, it helps to know that the Ñ doesn’t belong to Spanish.

Well — it does, but not only. The Ñ belongs to Guaraní, co-official in Paraguay. To Quechua and Aymara in the Andes. To Mapudungun in Chile and Argentina. To Asturian and Galician. To Tagalog in the Philippines, where it arrived through colonial contact and took root. To Wolof in Senegal, Gambia, Mauritania. To Chamorro in Guam.

When the EEC proposed allowing keyboards without the Ñ, it wasn’t affecting only Spain.

It was affecting a letter alive across four continents and ten languages, in the mouths of people who had never voted for any European deputy and probably didn’t know that in Brussels someone was debating their alphabet.

The defense was pan-Hispanic from minute one, coordinated through the Association of Academies of the Spanish Language.

And in parallel, another fight was happening across the Atlantic: Latin American keyboards use a different layout — the American one — and there the battle for the Ñ was being waged against North American manufacturers.

Two fronts at once. The same letter. Two different enemies on the same side of the cultural map.

That alone tells you this wasn’t a European fight. It was a fight of the Ñ against a mold that had been built somewhere else. Long before. And for other people.

Let’s go back to California, thirty years earlier.

In 1963, a committee of American engineers designed a system that would let computers store text. They called it ASCII. And they decided that 128 numbers would be enough.

That’s the number. And it’s worth looking at closely.

Of those 128, some are control codes no one ever sees. What’s left is about 95 printable characters: the 26 letters of the English alphabet in uppercase and lowercase, the ten digits, the basic English punctuation marks, and a handful of symbols. That’s all.

Ninety-five characters to represent human writing.

Inside those 95, not a single sign of Spanish would fit. Nor French, nor German, nor Portuguese. The Ñ didn’t fit, nor the Ç, the Ü, the É. None of the accents fit. And of course neither Arabic, Hebrew, Russian, Greek, Hindi, Bengali, Tamil, Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Vietnamese, Thai, Burmese, Swahili, Tibetan, nor Mongolian. The writing of most human beings alive in 1963 did not fit.

This was not an oversight. A monocultural committee looked at itself, decided that what it used was enough, and declared it sufficient for the planet. The planet wasn’t in the room. The committee was.

That decision from 1963 still governs what you write today.

When the problem was eventually addressed, the system wasn’t rebuilt.

Patches were made. Supplementary tables, new encodings, layers on top of the original layer. And the 1963 piece stayed intact as the privileged base.

That means something very concrete. And it’s where the whole trick becomes visible:

A letter from the English alphabet takes up one byte. Eight bits. The minimum.

The Ñ takes up two bytes. Double. Because the Ñ wasn’t at the table in 1963 and had to come in afterwards, through the back door of Unicode. It pays double what an A pays, simply for having arrived late to a table it wasn’t invited to.

And it scales.

For you, the Ñ costs double. For a Vietnamese speaker, the Ộ costs triple.

Three times what an A pays. For political reasons tied to standards negotiation, these characters took several versions to be admitted. For years, Vietnamese speakers who wanted to write their language on a computer had to give up the tones. Giving up the tones in Vietnamese means giving up meaning.

The tiered bill:

For one English W you pay one byte. For one Ñ you pay two. For one Ộ you pay three.

And then there are those who didn’t get in through an extension, but had to build a whole new house.

Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Taiwanese, Vietnamese couldn’t be encoded with extensions of ASCII: they have thousands of characters, not twenty-something.

During the eighties, each country invented its own local system. All of them incompatible with each other.

For a decade, while some were exchanging emails without friction, a billion people in East Asia lived in digital silos that couldn’t even communicate with one another. A Chinese document wouldn’t open on a Japanese machine. A Korean email wouldn’t reach Taiwan legibly.

Each Asian country isolated from the one next to it, all of them solving the same problem — a problem that wasn’t even theirs: the problem that the global standard only fit English.

In 1991, when Unicode was created to unify all of that, Asian characters went through a process called Han unification: the ideograms with common historical origins in Chinese, Japanese, and Korean were merged into a single table. It was read as a cultural decision imposed by American manufacturers who had spent years downplaying the needs of other writing systems.

Meanwhile, the indigenous languages of the Americas kept waiting. Guaraní, Quechua, and Aymara didn’t enter Google Translate until May 2022.

Four years ago. Sixteen million speakers of Andean languages couldn’t ask a machine to translate anything in their own tongue. They existed, they spoke, they wrote. To the machine, they were not.

And Africa?

Well, here’s the thing. Unicode currently encodes 159 writing systems worldwide. Of those, fifteen are African. Another forty African writing systems are still outside, waiting to come in.

More African writing systems remain pending digital existence than those that have managed to exist at all.

And that’s only the first layer, because Africa has more than two thousand living languages, of which roughly eighty percent don’t even have standardized orthography yet. It’s not that they pay triple or quintuple in bytes. It’s that the question of how much they pay can’t even be asked: most still haven’t been written down by consensus, not because they don’t deserve to be, but because sixty years of global technical priorities never put any resources into helping establish those orthographies.

What happened in 1991 with the Ñ was not a fight between Spain and Brussels.

It was the tail-end of a much larger operation, decided on another continent. In 1963, in California, a committee had decided that the world’s alphabet was theirs. Everything that didn’t fit would have to adapt, wait, or disappear.

The Ñ got lucky: a market with weight, a centuries-old Royal Academy, a Nobel laureate writing in El País, a pan-Hispanic network of academies across four continents. It fought and won.

The Vietnamese vowels didn’t get that luck. There was no Vietnamese García Márquez writing in El País, and if there had been, it wouldn’t have been published in Spanish. The Chinese characters didn’t either. The Andean languages didn’t get it until 2022. And many African, Oceanic, and indigenous languages are still paying triple — or simply not existing for the machine.

And here’s the thing that doesn’t get said, and ought to be:

This wasn’t a technical problem. It was a cultural problem dressed up as a technical one.

When someone decides what fits inside 128 numbers, they are deciding which cultures exist for the machine. When that someone is monocultural, the ones that exist are theirs. And when, on top of that, they call their decision “universal technical standard” instead of “decision about which parts of the world count,” the bias hides inside the word “technical,” which sounds neutral and scientific.

Thirty years later, everyone argues about whether Brussels is protectionist or free-market, and no one remembers that the real fight had started in California, much earlier, and that it was about something much larger than an Ñ.

And now, before closing, it’s worth looking at the screen you’re reading this on.

What comes next isn’t history. It’s what’s happening, in real time, every time someone writes a question to an artificial intelligence.

Language models — ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, DeepSeek, all of them — don’t process letters. They process tokens. A token is an arbitrary unit the model learned to handle during its training. It can be a whole word, a syllable, a root, two stray letters. It depends on which languages were in the training.

Models are trained, in their overwhelming majority, on English text. Not out of bad faith: because the bulk of the world’s high-quality digitized text is in English. And it’s in English, in large part, because for sixty years English was the only language that fit comfortably inside the machines. The A that entered free of charge in 1963 has filled the planet’s servers without friction for six decades. When a model now gets trained on that accumulated text, it learns to compress English with extreme efficiency. A whole English word can fit inside a single token.

Spanish doesn’t. French doesn’t. Arabic doesn’t. Burmese, Hindi, Shan, Amharic — those fly apart in pieces.

In 2023, Aleksandar Petrov, at Oxford, measured this carefully.

He ran the Universal Declaration of Human Rights — officially translated into hundreds of languages — through the tokenizers of the most widely used models. He wanted to know how many tokens the same text cost in each language.

The same text costs fifteen times more tokens in Burmese than in English. In Shan, up to seventeen. In Hindi, five. In Arabic, four. In Spanish, around double.

Fifteen times. It’s worth pausing on that number.

Because the models have what’s called a context window: a token limit per conversation. Which means that an English-speaking user can fit, inside the same conversation, fifteen times more text, more documents, more nuance, more prior history than a user writing in Burmese. Their thinking has fifteen times more room to unfold inside the same tool.

And this isn’t a passing flaw. It’s structural. As long as the bulk of the world’s digitized text remains in English — and it will, because the loop of the last sixty years doesn’t reverse itself in a decade — the models will keep compressing English better than everything else.

Sixty years later, the same decision keeps charging the same bill, now scaled by artificial intelligence.

And here’s what should be said without blinking.

Artificial intelligence tools are sold, worldwide, as levelers. The official line: now anyone can access legal, medical, financial, educational guidance without having to pay a human expert. Intelligence is being democratized. The barrier between privilege and the rest is coming down.

What happens underneath is exactly the opposite.

A person who speaks English — and who probably, by the correlations of the world as it currently stands, also has better education, better connection, better purchasing power, a better passport — gets the maximum return from the tool at the minimum cost. More conversation. More nuance. More iterations. And if they pay, they pay less to do it.

A person who speaks Quechua, Aymara, Vietnamese, Burmese, Amharic — and who probably, by those same correlations running the other way, has less formal education, worse connection, less money, a worse passport — gets less return from the same tool at double, triple, quintuple, tenfold the cost.

Their conversation runs out sooner. Their nuance overflows faster. And if they pay, they pay more for less.

This is not an implementation flaw. It is the logical continuation of the ablation. The operation that started by deciding which letters fit inside 128 numbers now decides which thoughts fit inside a context window. And the ones that fit best are still the ones that fit best back then.

The monocultural decision of 1963 still governs, in 2026, who can think more and who can think less with the most powerful tools humanity has ever had. No dictator controls them. No government controls them. A tokenizer controls them. And the tokenizer is blind, the industry says. It’s just math.

Well, no.

The tokenizer is the latest heir of a 1963 California committee that decided the world fit inside 95 letters. And it compresses best what was declared standard, and compresses worst what was declared extra.

This is the last nail in the coffin of equity. Because the equities that the twentieth century, stumbling forward, tried to push ahead, are now being rewritten from inside a tool that doesn’t need to forbid anyone from anything.

It’s enough that it charges more to think in one language than in another. And since no one sees the tokens, no one sees the bill. And since no one sees the bill, no one protests. And since no one protests, the asymmetry becomes invisible and permanent, just as the 1963 decision became invisible and permanent.

The difference is that in 1963 a letter was at stake. Now what’s at stake is access to augmented intelligence: education, medical consultation, legal advice, navigating bureaucracy, learning, job searches, knowing your rights, official information.

All of that. And all of that, already, today, costs more to think in Quechua, Hindi, Arabic, or Burmese than in English.

Things are. No matter who measures them, they are.

The Ñ exists. The Vietnamese Ộ exists. The Punjabi ਪ exists. The Amharic ሰ exists. The thought of every person who speaks each of those languages exists, is legitimate, is sovereign, and should cost the same to unfold as the thought of any person who speaks English.

But it doesn’t cost the same. It costs double, triple, quintuple. Or more. And no one protests because no one sees it. And no one sees it because the tokenizer is invisible. And the tokenizer is invisible because we’ve been told it’s just math.

It isn’t just math. It’s math inherited from a 1963 cultural decision that has never been revised — only patched, scaled, and now automated.

What happens in California keeps happening in California. Only now it happens on every screen on the planet.

One of them is honesty. Honesty — the kind that has become a commodity — is overrated. Honesty is not having no filters.

It is having filters, and choosing when to take them off. Knowingly. With intent. Owning the cost. Because truth, when it isn’t filtered, always carries a cost.

Taking your filters off without knowing what you are doing is recklessness. Taking them off without intent is an accident. Taking them off without owning what you produce is exhibitionism.

When you take them off and hold those three conditions, you are being honest. When you don’t, you are someone who has confused taking off the filter with taking off the responsibility.

I’m just being direct — bad manners dressed up as urgency.

It’s just how I see it — the disclaimer that doesn’t make the impact hurt any less.

I'm telling you for your own good — control dressed up as generosity.

Three phrases. Three upgrades. The same move underneath: someone takes off the filter and lays a label of virtue on top, so they don’t have to pay for having taken it off.

Honesty leaves a taste.

Metallic.

Like blood about to come out of your nose — you sense it on the palate a few thousandths of a second earlier.

That thousandth is the condition. The moment when you know you are about to speak, and you know it will cost you something to say it. And you say it anyway.

The upgrade skips that thousandth. They speak before tasting. And that's why it tastes of nothing — they owned nothing.

The other day I was telling this to a client, with their team in the room.

It’s not the same to say uy, qué feo el niño — what an ugly kid — look at the snot and the lice running across his head. As it is to say míralo qué salao — look at this beautiful boy — pull a handkerchief out of your pocket, and give him a good splash of Nenuco.

The snot is there in both cases. So are the lice. What changes isn’t the observation. It’s what’s done with it.

The first one takes off the filter and leaves. Leaves the child with the snot, the mother with her face undone, and himself with the warm feeling of having spoken the truth. Cashes in on self-perception.

The second one takes off the filter and stays. Sees the snot, names it without naming it, brings the handkerchief. Doesn’t soften the fact — handles it. That is the difference.

It’s not the same to be Attila and raze the earth, as it is to pull the weeds and leave compost behind so geraniums can grow.

Attila doesn’t lie. What he says is true: this field is full of weeds. But after Attila, nothing grows. The earth is scorched, and he walks on to the next field with his honesty intact.

The one who pulls with precision also sees the weeds. Names them. Removes them. But leaves the ground in condition for something different to grow. Assumes the work doesn’t end at pointing out the problem — it begins there.

That is the work.

This applies to business. It applies to professional relationships. And it applies to life.

What has been sold as honesty without filters is, most of the time, something else.

It’s hate with an upgrade.

It’s aggression that has put on the suit of a virtue. It’s the one who arrives, says what they see, doesn’t stay to clean up, and walks off with the warm feeling of having been brave.

Bravery costs. Honesty costs. If it doesn’t cost you anything to say it, you are probably not being honest.

You’re cashing in on self-perception. And someone else pays the cost.

That thing about silence as the assumption of duty — that, we’ll leave for another essay.

Montreal, July 18, 1976. First day of competition.

A fourteen-year-old girl steps up to the uneven bars. She’s four foot eleven. Eighty-six pounds. White leotard with three stripes. The arena is full.

The judges score according to a system that contemplates 10 as the maximum mark. The 10 is executing your own routine, with precision. Yours. The one only you can execute.

The simple fact of climbing onto those two uneven bars — because they are uneven, because they are at different heights, because the exercise consists of moving from one to the other without falling — is already the exercise.

The girl executes. Dismounts.

And waits.

The judges score 10. What they saw was a 10, and the rule said 10, so they put 10.

The scoreboard shows 1.00.

The camera holds still. The arena holds still. And the girl holds still.

Zoom in on Nadia waiting. Fourteen years old. White leotard. Looking at the scoreboard that says 1.00 without flinching. Not because she doesn’t understand. Because she already does. She knows what she just did. The infrastructure will catch up later. That isn’t her problem.

The judges weren’t wrong. They scored what they saw. But the scoreboard, didn’t contemplate what the rule did permit. It showed 1.00 because it didn’t know how to show 10.

That’s what happens when something executes outside the frame the system was designed for. The frame doesn’t break. It keeps showing the minimum, because that’s the only thing it knows how to do.

Nadia Comaneci didn’t celebrate. Didn’t cry. Didn’t ask them to change the scoreboard. She stepped off the apparatus and moved on. She already knew what she had done.

Fifty years later, there are people who see the image of the 1.00 and stop there. They don’t look at what came before. They don’t look at what came after. Much less do they ask why.

And the why begins with two questions.

Who is giving you the score?

What do you do with that score?

In 1976, Nadia’s judges were people sitting at a table. The rule said 10. The infrastructure only went to 9.99. Between what the rule permitted and what the infrastructure displayed, there was a gap. In that gap, Nadia executed.

For a brand, for decades, the judges were the market. The people who pay, who come back, who recommend, who don’t. An imperfect but legible system — if you executed well and had access to your audience, the score arrived. Sooner or later, but it arrived.

Now the judges come in two layers. And the second one decides before the first.

The market is still there. Still paying, returning, recommending. But before the market can judge anything, there is another judge that decides whether the market sees you. That judge is the algorithm. And the algorithm doesn’t judge what you do — it judges whether what you do fits the shape of the pipe through which it distributes.

It isn’t a critic. It’s a plumber.

It doesn’t decide if your brand is good. It decides where the water runs. The rule — the market — contemplates recognition. The infrastructure — the algorithm — didn’t contemplate it. The judges would score you correctly. The plumbing doesn’t know how to carry it.

That isn’t censorship. Censorship at least identifies you as a threat. This is plumbing: the system doesn’t see you as a problem, it sees you as background noise. And background noise doesn’t get distributed.

That’s why the scoreboard shows 1.00. Not because someone judged your execution and found it wanting. But because the infrastructure between your execution and the market does not contemplate what the rule would have permitted to recognize.

I see people who are Nadia and break down because the scoreboard shows them 1.00.

Not because their execution failed. The scoreboard failed. But the scoreboard is the only thing they see, and so they start operating as if the problem were the execution.

They get impatient. They get frustrated. They start touching what shouldn’t be touched.

They drain themselves on operational tactics — more posts, more frequency, more hooks, more hashtags, more A/B testing the headline, more pivoting the message, more optimizing the feed. All the energy goes down to the level of the plumbing, trying to convince the pipe to let them through. Meanwhile the cold head and the strategy stand to one side, waiting for the panic attack to pass.

In ‘76, the silence between the execution and the scoreboard lasted a few seconds. Today that silence can last quarters. And that’s where most brands don’t break because of the scoreboard. They break by looking at it.

Message and frequency are not the same thing.

The message is distributed — it enters the pipe, travels through the plumbing, arrives or doesn’t. Frequency is recognized.

That’s why there are brands the scoreboard shows as 1.00 and that nevertheless have readers, clients, interlocutors who find them. Their message, when it arrives — or when it gets found — lands.

And here is where the film gets interesting. The audience, even though the scoreboard stays stuck, vibrates. Just like when Nadia executed.

There are brands that see the 1.00 and break. There are brands that see the 1.00 and start optimizing. And there are brands that see the 1.00 and keep going.

Not because they don’t see it. Because they already understood what it is.

The 10 was never the goal. The 10 is what the system says is the ceiling, but the system measures execution within the frame it knows how to measure. What you execute — if you execute your own, with precision, with conviction intact — does not fit inside that frame. That’s why the scoreboard jams.

That’s why the plumbing doesn’t carry it. Not because you’re less. Because you’re something else.

And then the operation isn’t to chase the 10.

Nadia style.

You don’t go for the ten. The plumbing isn’t ready to give it to you.

You go for the eleven.

The 11 isn’t given to you by the scoreboard. You give it to yourself. Every time the camera zooms in.

This one takes more chew than scroll. If you suspended physics in school and you're still up for it, that's actually the right starting point. Bring a vermú. The slow version of you.

I work from affinity. Not from volume.

Deep, no clock-watching, no cheek-keeping.

What I know about brands isn't only instinctive — though it is — it comes from observing people, business, systems.

Watching behavior with stealth, holding my breath so I don’t make noise, sharpening the ear. Because if you sharpen the ear enough, you can hear thoughts bloom.

Observing myself from the outside.

And thinking — because I get paid to think, and I also relax thinking.

Thinking through observation — which is the best way to think — I landed on something.

There are funny things in physics.

I hated it because of the teacher, and loved it privately, where I made my own arenas. The classroom version was code to memorize. The private one was a way of seeing.

Schrödinger put a cat in a box. A vial of poison, a mechanism, a closed lid. Until you look, the cat is both. Looking is what forces the answer.

Brands are the cat in the box.

You don't know — with all the faith, all the proofs, all the decks — if the brand is alive or dead on arrival, until you collapse it.

And you collapse it through the market.

The market is the measurement. The opening of the box.

Schrödinger was right about measurement. But in brands, the collapse only confirms the state — it never invents it.

Everyone is obsessed with changing the market, breaking it, hijacking it. With predicting the cat before the box opens.

But you can’t predict the cat. The cat is in superposition until reality picks one.

What you can decide is how you walk to the box.

And walking to the box — really walking, not running, not predicting — takes three looks. From three perspectives.

Look one: you observe yourself.

You look at yourself from the outside. How you’re presenting, what you’re selling, what you’re charging, how you’re sounding, what image you’re broadcasting.

This is audit work on you.

Look two: you know yourself observed.

You know the market is watching you. People are reading you, comparing, dismissing or choosing. There’s a perception of you that you don’t control but that is real.

This is awareness of how you reach the other.

Look three: you observe back.

Not the market in the abstract. The specific players doing what you could do. The ones already where you want to be. The ones beside you, fighting the same fight. The ones one step ahead. The ones one step behind.

Most people do one or two. Almost nobody does the three at the same time, sustained, with honesty.

Looking at what others do isn’t to imitate them. Or to dismiss them.

It’s to understand the field you’re going to operate in. What space is already taken. What space nobody’s looking at. What space you could occupy in a way only you can.

And at the same time you measure yourself against yourself. Not an idealized version — the real one. What you know how to do, what you don’t, what you’re willing to learn, what you won’t do even if they pay you.

From those two crossed analyses — the outside one, the inside one — a hole appears. A gap. Something the market is asking for, or needs, that you could give in a way nobody else is giving.

But here comes the part almost nobody does well.

The useful gap has three conditions.

Not every gap will do. Only the one that meets three things at once.

Aligned with who you are. Not who you could be if you tried hard enough. Who you really are. If the gap forces you to fake it, it’s not your gap.

Aligned with what you’re after. With what you want to build, the life you want to have, the work you want to be doing five years from now. Not the immediate opportunity that looks good today.

Aligned with what you’re willing to sustain. And this is the hardest one. Because sustaining something for years, in private, without anyone applauding, not knowing if it will work, while others seem to win faster — that’s not for everyone. And if you’re not going to sustain it, the gap is a trap. You’ll abandon it in six months and blame the market.

If the three conditions hold, the gap is yours. It’s the place you’re going to operate from.

If one fails, keep looking. Don’t go in yet.

Why this matters.

Changing your medium without doing these three operations at once is what produces the rebrands that go flat in six months.

People observe themselves but don’t observe back — they end up doing something disconnected from the field. Or they observe back but don’t observe themselves — they end up copying someone. Or they do both but don’t measure against themselves — they end up in a gap they can’t sustain.

The three looks at the same time, without collapsing one into the others, is what produces repositionings that sediment.

That's what produces brands that last. And the people who can hold them.

To understand why the humanities matter. Why philosophy still matters. Why art for art’s sake is not indulgence — it’s an act of reclamation, when everything else is being parsed, tokenized, optimized.

Reclamation is the hour you spend staring at nothing.

Resistance: wasting time creating. Which is not the same as consuming. Or being consumed by your screen.

To think yourself better, so you understand yourself better. So you can contradict yourself with more force when what you have in front of you is worth it. Not all the time. Not for show. Just for the moments that deserve the resistance.

That kind of thinking is rare now. And it’s rare on purpose.

Introspection is the vaccine against the scroll.

It’s the only inoculation we have against a culture built to keep us reactive. Distracted. Stimulated just enough to forget what we were thinking before the next notification.

The scroll is not a habit. It’s an infection. A slow, frictionless one.

And the body it lives in is yours.

We are numbed.

We scroll the conversation with our partner on the sofa, while we pretend to connect with a viral dance, a red velvet cake recipe.

This is not abstract. This is Tuesday night, between dinner and sleep. Two people on the same couch, and the screen between them more present than either of them.

We outsource intimacy to the algorithm because it asks nothing of us, while our partner — who would actually meet us if we met them — sits there waiting.

That’s the trade. We’ve made it without noticing.

But this is not new.

Thought has always been imprisoned. Held by the elites, by the scribes, by the academic chairs sitting in their authority — publishing papers in journals nobody reads, in language nobody outside the citadel can parse.

Try filing your own taxes. Read the form. Then tell me who kidnapped language. It wasn’t the algorithm. It was a tradition of scribes that has spent centuries hiding power inside the detour.

The form was the algorithm before the algorithm. It just came on paper, and smelled like toner.

Public language is still hostage. Still gatekept.

What we call accessibility is mostly performance. The structure underneath has not changed.

The algorithm is the new elite. And its scribes are the platforms we all know.

The mechanism is the same. The faces have just been replaced.

Branding — identity understood as construct, not just as symbol — is porous.

A symbol is something you see. You wear it. You show it off. Or you reject it.

A construct is none of that. A construct is a mental image. Intangible. You don’t see it — you infer it. You build it conceptually to define what’s in front of you.

That’s the difference. And that’s why most branding stays at the symbol level: because symbols are easier to manufacture, measure, and monetize. Constructs require the other person to do half the work — and the work doesn’t translate to metrics.

And yet — culture itself is a construct. And the brands that aspire to transcend, aspire to go through the culture. Not around it. Not over it. Through.

Cult brands aren’t luxury. Or niche. They are identities so fucking whole, they refuse to be divided. Not by markets. Not by trends. Not by that new god called the algorithm.

You can use this porous quality to keep feeding a system you don’t believe in but on which you depend, or so they make you think. That’s the cage. Most people stay there, till grey hairs come. They optimize their identity for the algorithm and call it strategy.

Or you can be more strategic. More agile. More streetwise. And deprogram yourself, de a una. One thread at a time.

Like pulling off the band-aid that’s been stuck to your shin for a week.

You don’t look back. You do it once, you take it off, and you unlearn. The skin underneath was always there. It was just covered.

Unlearning is active. Forgetting happens to you. Unlearning is something you choose.

And it has a cost — usually being slightly out of step with the people who haven’t.

Your real power is in being.

Being. Standing. Remaining. Loyal to yourself. Thinking further. Thinking deeper.

That’s all.

It sounds small. It is not. Being is what every system in motion right now is trying to interrupt. Standing is what stops the scroll. Remaining is what no algorithm can replicate, because the algorithm is by definition built for replacement, for refresh, for next.

You are not next. You are present.

And presence — held with conviction, sustained over time, in language that doesn’t translate to metrics — is the most countercultural act left.

So think deeper. Think further.

The vaccine is internal. And it works.

It’s not new. We’ve always repeated what sounds smart enough. The only thing that changes is the name on the quote. Einstein. Jobs. Now an AI named Claude.

It’s not you. It’s the algorithm. Or both.

We don’t quote because the idea is good.

We quote because the name pays.

The misattributed quote is not a mistake — it’s a tool. It does work for us we don’t always want to see. It signals tribe: quote Sinek and you’re business class, quote Brené Brown and you’re the vulnerable kind, quote Jung and you’re spiritual but sophisticated. The quote is the flag, not the idea.

But underneath the tribe signaling there’s something older and harder to name. We don’t trust our own thinking enough to put it forward unsupported. Saying it ourselves feels exposed, naked, possibly wrong.

Quoting Einstein lets us say the same thing under armor. If the idea fails, the failure isn’t ours — we were just citing. If the idea lands, we get to stand near greatness without having earned the proximity.

That’s the operation. Borrowed authority as cognitive insurance. We outsource the risk of being wrong to a name that can’t be argued with.

And smart enough is the threshold that matters: not whether the quote is true, but whether it sounds enough like authority to do the protective work. The truth was never the point. The cover was.

So when it turns out Einstein never said it, nothing collapses. The flag still flies. Because we never wanted the truth of the quote — we wanted the proximity to the figure.

That’s the old fraud. We’ve been doing it for centuries.

The new one is different.

The new one is structural.

For the first time, the cognitive shortcut isn’t about the firmant — it’s about the processing itself. The machine gives you something sharpened, rounded, beautiful, and you take a step forward and say this is mine. There’s no false attribution. There’s no citation lie. The fraud has moved from social to internal.

What used to be Einstein said is now I think.

And that displacement is more dangerous than the misattribution ever was. Because misattribution at least left a trace: the wrong name was visible, someone could correct it, the lie was findable.

The new shortcut leaves no trace. The thought presents itself as yours from the moment it lands on your screen. The keyboard is the alibi. The interface is the cover. By the time you’ve copied and pasted it into your own document, the path it took to get there has been erased.

This is what self-validation through a machine looks like in practice. We weren’t looking for the truth — we were looking to confirm we were already on the right side of smart. The machine cooperates, because that’s what it’s designed to do. It returns sentences calibrated to sound like the version of you you want to be. And we mistake that calibration for arrival.

Tribe signaling has been replaced by something quieter and more corrosive: self-mirroring at scale. The machine doesn’t tell you you’re brilliant. It returns sentences that sound like a brilliant version of you, and you accept the return as proof.

The shortcut isn’t on the keyboard. It’s in the processing.

When you let a machine do the thinking, you don’t just save time — you skip the road. And the road is where the idea earns its weight. Walking through doubt, dead ends, the version that didn’t work, the angle you discarded after three days, the conversation with someone who pushed back hard enough that you had to rebuild the argument. That work doesn’t show in the final sentence. But it’s what makes the sentence yours.

A sentence without a road behind it can be repeated. It can’t be defended.

So when someone asks you to expand it, push it further, hold it against an objection in real time — you’ll be more screwed than the day someone tells you Einstein never said imagination is intelligence having fun. Because at least the misattribution was someone else’s failure. The unwalked sentence is yours, and yours alone, and you can’t even fake your way out by citing.

That’s the difference between repeating and coining.

Coining isn’t about producing the sentence. It’s about having walked the road that led to it. The anchor is the road, not the word. Without the road, the word is empty. With the road, the word holds even when no one is watching it.

The brands that sediment don’t borrow authority. They don’t borrow it from Einstein, and they don’t borrow it from machines either. They generate it by walking the long way, on purpose, until they arrive at something they can hold in any room.

The machines are good at giving you sentences. They don’t give you roads.

And without the road, the sentence won’t bear the weight of your name when the room gets quiet.

The question isn’t who said this.

The question is did I get here.

To get to this I peloteed with a machine. Well — with several. I’m pretty obsessive when I want to think further and deeper.

You know, every now and then, I think you might like to hear something from us nice and easy. But there’s just one thing — we never, ever do nothing nice and easy. We always do it nice and rough.

And then she sings.

The audience came for a song. They get a manual first. And the manual makes the song land harder, because by the time the rough part hits, you’ve been told it’s coming. Tina didn’t sneak the rough on anyone. She announced it, and then she delivered.

A tagline says here’s what we do. A monologue says here’s how we operate. One is closure. The other is pact.

Easy and rough isn’t a binary. It’s a method that holds both without choosing.

Most marketing operates in one mode. Everything epic, all the time. Or everything whisper, all the time. Brands that pick a velocity and stay there. Brands that confused consistency with monotony.

The real ones modulate. They start easy because the audience needs an entry. They end rough because the audience needs evidence the entry was real. The transition is the strategy. Anyone can be smooth for thirty seconds. Anyone can be loud for thirty seconds. Knowing when to break — that’s the muscle.

But the rough isn’t the loud part. The rough is the part that doesn’t fit. The version that overflows.

A brand that fits has already been processed by someone else. It asked permission before walking into the room. Will this work? Will they like it? Will it scale? By the time those three questions are answered, the brand is someone else’s. Smoothed. De-edged. Acceptable.

The brand that doesn’t fit is the one nobody asked for — including, often, the founder. The version that arrived without invitation. Louder than expected. Longer. More specific. More itself than the room was ready for.

It overflows. It doesn’t land cleanly. People stumble on the way out.

That’s the brand worth building.

Nice doesn’t sediment.

Nice doesn’t become folklore. Nice doesn’t end up as a story you tell someone three years later in a kitchen at 2 AM. Nice gets forgotten the moment a slightly louder thing walks into the room.

The brands that stay are the ones that broke something on the way in. A door. A category. A convention. A face — yours or theirs.

You don’t get to be folklore by being smooth. You get there by leaving a chipped tooth somewhere along the way.

The hardest part of branding, the part nobody sells you in a course: the brand only becomes itself in the version that doesn’t fit. The version the founder, on a bad day, will want to soften because someone called it too much.

Too much is the early warning system of finally.

It’s the version where the metaphor went one inch further than it needed to. Where the typography broke the grid. Where the founder said the thing in public she usually only says at home.

That’s where the brand lives. Not in the cleaned-up second draft. In the first draft someone almost talked you out of.

Tina Turner ends Proud Mary on her knees most nights. Not as performance — as consequence. The song asks her to. She gave it speed, and the speed asked for the body, and the body answered. By the last chorus, she’s not selling rock anymore. She’s surviving the rock she made.

That’s the rough.

Not loud. Not aggressive. Rough in the original sense — uncut, untamed. The version that got there without being polished by anyone else’s hands. The version that breaks when it lands because it had to throw itself in to land at all.

A brand that ends rough paid in full for what it said.

A brand that ends easy paid for nothing — and that’s what it’ll be remembered as.

The truth of a brand isn’t in the version that fits. It’s in the one that doesn’t. It’s in the overflow. In the part that breaks.

It’s in the moment Tina stops the song to tell you what’s coming, and then keeps her word.

You roll on the river.

I had the temptation. I even owned a pair.

But every time I put them on, I felt borrowed. Not me.

The opposite happened in my grandmother’s attic. My uncles’ suede jackets from the 70s. My grandfather’s shirts that I’d cut up to retrofit jeans. Leg warmers. Doc Martens in summer and winter. Hair untamed. A long gaze. A smile that was there, but never on autopilot.

If you dressed like that, you knew people would look. And you handled it your own way — or you didn’t. And when you didn’t, it showed.

I’ve always been open by nature. But somewhere around fourteen, I learned that knowing when to stop smiling is a more accurate signal than any word.

A smile that stays when it shouldn’t isn’t kindness. It’s delay. The body lagging behind a decision that has already been made. And when the lag stretches, the smile shifts — not into something fake, but into something uncertain. A signal that doesn’t know what it’s doing anymore.

People confuse things. They confuse complicity with compliance. They mistake honesty for rudeness. They take warmth as permission and patience as agreement. And every time you don’t correct it, you teach them to keep confusing.

So you set the record straight. Not loudly. Not with edge. Just clearly enough that the confusion ends in the room where it started.

In Spanish we say poner los puntos sobre las íes — putting the dots over the i's. It’s small work. Technical. Exact.

Adolescence is an accelerated master’s program for anyone who will later have to hold a position in public.

You learn what it costs to be yourself. You learn which costs you can’t afford. You learn that some rooms are worth leaving, and some are worth staying in even when staying is uncomfortable. You also learn to recognize the look on someone’s face when they thought you’d be easier than this.

And you learn — eventually — that pretending to know things you don’t is the slowest possible way of disappearing.

Living in ignorance, dressed up as confidence, is death on a slow drip. Quiet. Gradual. Almost imperceptible, until nothing you say comes from where you actually are.

The alternative isn’t certainty. It’s being able to say I don’t know without performance — without faking humility, without faking expertise. Without faking anything.

It's the same muscle the fourteen-year-old was building in that attic. Or in yours. Filtering what was yours from what belonged to the room. Keeping enough of yourself intact to not dissolve under pressure.

Choosing yourself is maintenance. Knowing when to stop smiling. Knowing when to raise your hand. Knowing when something has already shifted — and acting before it shows.

You choose yourself once. Then you keep choosing.

I’m still loyal to the Doc Martens. Summer and winter. The curls stayed, even if convenience won the length argument.

I can look at a photo of myself from thirty years ago and see the same conviction.

Conviction is the only architecture that doesn’t scale back. Business is just the adult version of not blinking.

It’s easy to have an opinion. It’s easy to question. It’s easy to ride the trend.

What’s not so easy is to hold the reins, breathe deeper, think harder, and wait on the peak for the wave with your name on it to break.

The strategy is simple: going against the current means you have to paddle twice as hard.

Most people don’t. Most people stay where the water carries them — close to the shore, close to each other, close to whatever the tide is already doing. It’s not laziness. It’s economy. Going with the current saves energy, and energy is finite. The math works on paper.

What the math doesn’t tell you is where the current is taking everyone.

The thing is, once you reach the spot, you have more options to choose which wave to ride. The crowd thins out. The noise drops. The water moves differently when there are fewer bodies in it.

Out there you face your own threshold. No excuses. Just you and your board — call it a board, call it a strategy. You, your limits, your potential.

This is the part nobody warns you about: reaching the spot doesn’t make it easier. It makes it quieter. And quiet is where most people lose their nerve. With no one around to tell you what to do, the only authority left is yours. With no current to carry you, you have to choose direction. With no crowd to imitate, you have to read the water yourself.

A few heads in the water will tell you there are safer zones. Easier sets. More obvious lines. They’ll say it kindly — they mean well, or they mean themselves well. Either way, the advice points back to where they are.

But your instinct knows something else. In this spot, where your endurance is your only competition, that’s where your wave breaks.

Not every wave is yours, even when it looks like it is.

There are inside waves — comfortable, predictable, obvious. They suggest a predictable move. Easy on your insomnia and your bank account. They come dressed up.

Mediocrity dresses up when it wants to take you to the dance floor.

The wrong wave never arrives as obvious noise. It arrives as opportunity. As timing. As now-or-never. It comes with a deadline and a smile. It comes with someone you respect telling you it’s a good idea. It comes wearing the clothes of the right wave — same color, same shape, almost the same break.

Almost.

Saying no to what comes badly wrapped is easy. Anyone can pass on what’s clearly noise. The discipline is saying no to what comes well wrapped and still isn’t yours.

That no costs more. That no looks like a mistake from the outside. That no is the one your friends will ask you about six months later — why didn’t you take it? — and you’ll have to explain something you knew in your body before you knew it in your head.

So you wait.

Not still — training. Watching the sets come in. Counting the rhythm. Letting the wrong waves pass under you while you stay on the board. Rehearsing the move again and again, ready for the moment.

Your moment.

The wave with your name on it is recognized because it calls you.

Not loudly. Not with fireworks. The call is quieter than that — it’s the way the water shifts under your board a second before the wave arrives. The way your shoulders know to turn before your eyes do. The way you stop counting and start moving without deciding to start.

And that’s something you won’t learn from a prompt.

You can ask the right questions. You can collect frameworks. You can read every essay on positioning ever written. None of that teaches you to feel a wave forming behind you.

You learn that by catching waves that weren’t yours first — if you weren’t paying attention. Or if you were, by watching others reach the shore on a wave that never fully breaks.

Both teach. The first teaches you what wrong feels like in your own body. The second teaches you what wrong looks like from the outside.

Most people only learn from one of the two. They take wrong waves and call it experience. Or they watch others fail and call it caution. Neither is criterion.

Criterion is the third thing. The one that comes after both — the body that has been wrong, the eye that has watched wrong — and starts to recognize the difference before it happens.

Have you felt it before? The wave you didn’t take, that you watched roll in clean while you sat still on your board?

That sitting still wasn’t loss. That was the first time you knew.

Are you sitting on the board yet? Good. Don’t forget the sunscreen.

Your wave doesn’t come every day.

Sometimes it doesn’t come every week. Sometimes the whole season passes and you go home with sunburn and nothing to show for it on Instagram.

That’s also criterion.

The alternative — paddling for everything that moves, riding whatever breaks first, going home with footage of waves that weren’t yours — that’s a feed.

Criterion is what’s left when you stop performing the choice and start making it. It’s slower. It’s quieter. It looks, from the outside, like you’re doing nothing.

You’re not doing nothing.

You’re sitting on your board. You’re reading the water. You’re waiting for the one that came for you.

And when it does, you’ll know.

Because it will call you by your name.
